Collegiate Check-up
Joscie Kaup's career came to a close Friday. But what an outstanding career it was.
Kaup, a 2004 Fort Recovery High School graduate, leaves Syracuse University with her name all over the record book.
She capped her career with 13 digs as the Orange dropped out of the Big East tournament with an opening round loss to No. 22 Louisville. Those digs, along the 15 she recorded against Villanova and 18 versus Seton Hall in the final two matches of the regular season, gave her 2,205 for her career and an averaged of 4.66.
Both of those numbers are school records, shattering the previous marks of 1,791 total digs and .83 per game set by 2000 graduate Rachel Watson. She also ranks among the top 20 in NCAA history for career digs.
Her 166 career aces are fourth all time for Syracuse, and she also ranks in the top five in aces per game.
Kaup's 685 digs a year ago were the most ever in a season by a Syracuse player, and she also ranks third, sixth and seventh on the single-season list. She is the single-season digs per game leader after recording 5.31 per game in 2006, and she also had the second-best serving season in school history with 63 aces.
Alyssa Johnson
Jay County - 2006
Led the Taylor University women's cross country team to its best day of the season as it placed eighth out of 24 teams at the Nov. 10 National Christian College Championships.
Johnson turned in the top time of the season for the Trojans, finishing in 19-minutes, 10 seconds.
She was 18th out of 162 runners, and helped the Taylor team post an average time of less than 20 minutes.
Holly Stein
Fort Recovery - 2007
Got off to a tremendous start to her career, leading the Defiance College women's basketball team to victory in its season opener.
Stein started for Yellow Jackets and led a 76-66 win Saturday, Nov. 17, over Siena Heights with a game-high 23 points. She was on fire, hitting 6-of-10 from the field, including her only 3-point attempt, and going a perfect 10-for-10 at the free-throw line.
She also had game bests of seven steals and five assists to go along with three rebounds in her 31 minutes.
Tiff Gaerke
Fort Recovery - 2007
Helped the No. 16 University of Dayton women's volleyball team cap its regular season at 28-1 before heading the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
Gaerke recorded two kills, a dig and a block in the Flyers' final match of the regular season, a three-game victory Nov. 10 over Rhode Island.
Heading into the A-10 tournament, in which Dayton took the title with wins over Temple and Xavier, Gaerke had 26 digs, 21 kills, five aces, five blocks and two assists.
Dayton will play in the A-10/MAC Challenge this week at Miami University (Ohio) before advancing to the NCAA tournament, which begins Nov. 29.

Turned in his best effort thus far in helping the Goshen College men's basketball team to victory Friday and Saturday in the Siena Heights University Maple City Classic.
Bruggeman hit three of his four field-goal attempts in the opening round of the tournament, scoring nine points as Goshen knocked off Daemen College 74-60. He also had a team-best five assists in the game to go along with two steals, one block and one rebound.
