Kaup to be honored by Fort chamber
Business roundup
The Fort Recovery Chamber of Commerce announced that Tess Kaup will be awarded with the 2009 Citizen of the Year award.
Kaup has been active with the Fort Recovery Merchants Association, Fort Recovery Athletic Boosters, Fort Recovery Historical Society and has assisted with local events as well as being a local business owner for many years.
Kaup provided leadership for coordinating the Christmas Open House and publication of the local shoppers guide for several years.
Other awards being awarded at the chamber's annual banquet on March 14 include Hall of Fame recipients Cy LeFevre and Roger Lennartz, and the 16th Annual Outstanding Community Service Award to the Cooper Family Foundation.
Tickets for the banquet are available at local banks, Fort Recovery Insurance Agency or by calling (419) 375-2530.
Lawsuit filed
A lawsuit was filed against First Merchants Bank, alleging that the company mismanaged a customer's $2 million trust.
Betty Kendall, a retired teacher and daughter of a former First Merchant's president, filed the suit in Delaware Circuit Court alleging that the company's poor investment strategy caused the trust's balance to dwindle from about $2 million down to $160,000.
Kendall alleges the bank switched its investments from a diverse portfolio including 22 entities, down to two stocks, First Merchants and Old National Bank.
Credential awarded
Brian Hurt, Portland, was awarded a Child Development Associate credential by the Council for Professional Recognition in Washington D.C.
The credential is given for outstanding work with young children in early education. Candidates are evaluated for their ability to work with families to develop a child's physical and intellecual capabilities.
Hurt works with Educare, an early education service located in Portland.
Buying
Walgreen Co. has agreed to purchase pharmacy chain Duane Reade for about $620 million.
The deal will acquire all of Duane Reade's 257 stores in the New York area and Walgreens will assume approximately $480 in debt.
Walgreens, which posted $63 billion in sales last year, is seeking to keep ahead of competitor CVS Caremark as well as retail store pharmacies including Wal-Mart.
Earnings up
Waste Mangement Inc. posted a 45 percent increase in earnings in the fourth quarter due to tax benefits, cost cuts and increase in recyclable prices.
Profits rose to $315 million in the fourth quarter, up from $218 a year prior. Total revenue, however, fell by 3.3 percent to $3.01 billion.
Prices for recycled commodities increased 20 percent during the quarter, which aided in raising profits.
Soft sales
Wal-Mart is predicting soft sales ahead after experiencing a decline in its fourth quarter.
Consumer confidence is increasing and buyers may become less cost-conscious, a move that could hurt Wal-Mart, which benefited as consumers switched toward the retailer's discounted items as the recession settled in.
Wal-Mart still saw a 22 percent profit increase in the fourth quarter as it controlled expenses although same-store sales fell 1.6 percent as competitors are picking up additional market share.
The company is attributing the slowdown as a return to normalcy after strong performance through the onset of the recession.
