Jay County roundup

PORTLAND — For the third time this year Jay County’s boys soccer team scored in double digits, rolling to an 11-4 victory over the Connersville Spartans Tuesday.

Each of the Patriots’ three wins have come by large margins. They defeated Monroe Central 10-1 in the season opener and topped Delta 10-0 last week.

Seniors Chad Keen and Trent Bailey led the destruction of the Olympic Athletic Conference rival Spartans, each scoring four goals.

Keen scored the second and third goals of the game for Jay County (3-2, 1-0 OAC). He put the ball in the net 10:09 into the first half, and scored again just 35 seconds later on an assist from Drew Schoenherr.

He added a third first-half goal with about 10 minutes to play, but still the Patriots were only up 4-3 at halftime.

But Connersville managed just one goal after the intermission while the Patriot barrage kept coming.

Bailey scored on an assist from Keen 9:12 into the second half, and Keen tallied his final score 1:34 later. Bailey scored three more times in the second half for his four scores.

Scott “Scooter” Bruggeman scored once in each half for a pair of goals, and Sergio Woo added one. Bailey posted an assist on Woo’s score for five points, and Keen did him one better as he had a pair of assists for six points.

Woo had two assists, and Thornburg and Schoenherr each finished with one.

Bailey spent the first half in goal, saving three out of six shots. Derek Mills saved one of two shots which came his way in the second half.

Jay County will play at home again Thursday against Norwell at 5 p.m.
