CONNERSVILLE — Alex Sutton and James Keen each picked up a victory for the Patriots Saturday.
The duo led the Jay County High School boys swim team to a second-place finish with 255 points at the five-team Connersville Invitational. New Castle won with 304.5, and the host Spartans were third with 251.5.
The Patriot girls placed third with 281 points behind Connersville (353) and New Castle (298).
Sutton dominated the 500-yard freestyle for JCHS, winning by more than 15 seconds in 5 minutes, 40.33 seconds. Keen added a victory in the 100 backstroke in 1:00.89.
Mary Hudson was the lone double winner for the Patriots, taking the top spot in the girls 100 breaststroke in 1:12.95 and 100 butterfly in 1:06.73. Rachel Vogler was the runner-up in the diving competition with 274.75 points, and Katy Smeltzer finished second in the 50 freestyle in 26.43.

GARRETT — South Adams had another difficult night of shooting Saturday in a 74-31 loss to the Garrett Railroaders.
The Starfires (2-9) trailed 23-2 after the opening quarter and shot just 18 percent from the field for the game. They are shooting 26 percent on the season.
Dzejna Ahmetovic recorded a double-double for South Adams with 16 points and 10 rebounds. She shot 10-of-11 from the foul line and also notched four blocks.
Allison Amstutz added four points and four steals.
In the junior varsity game, Marissa Bisel finished with five points for the Starfires in a 43-15 defeat.
Jay wrestlers 5th
MONTICELLO — Kyle Garringer earned the lone championship for the Jay County wrestling team Saturday as it finished fifth out of 16 teams at the Twin Lakes Invitational.
The Patriots scored 145 points to finish two ahead of sixth-place Lewis Cass. South Bend Riley (191) took the title in front of the host Indians (181.5), Delphi (180) and Peru (149.5).
Garringer cruised through the opening two rounds, winning with pins 1 minute, 44 seconds and 1:16. He won the championship match at 195 pounds by a 9-2 decision over Kevin Winkle of Twin Lakes.
Eric Hemmelgarn (285) and Zach Metcalf (160) each added a runner-up efforts for the Patriots.
Hemmelgarn recorded two pins and a win by decision before suffering his first loss of the season to Marcus Dozier of Riley in the championship match in 1:47. He is 22-1 on the season.
Metcalf posted a pair of pins to advance to the finals, where he fell in 5:38 to Riley’s Chase Hack.[[In-content Ad]]
