INDIANAPOLIS - Three more matches.

Jay County High School junior Casey Kenney earned himself a state medal Friday night with a 4-0, first-round victory over Mount Vernon's Jacob McCarthy in the IHSAA Wrestling State Finals at Conseco Fieldhouse. He now stands three matches away from a state title and a perfect season.

Kenney (103), who is 45-0, earned a quarterfinal match-up with Beck by following the same strategy that has carried him through the tournament thus far. He scored first, and put the pressure on McCarthy.

Seeking to be the aggressor, Kenney used a hip toss for a takedown in the opening minute for a 2-0 lead. He added a two-point near fall, and his 4-0 lead at the close of the first period stood as the final score.

He is just one of eight wrestlers remaining in the 103-pound bracket, and state medals go to the top eight wrestlers in each weight class. However, Kenney didn't go to Indianapolis looking for just a medal. He wants the medal.

As he continues to try to achieve his state championship goal, he will open Saturday's action with a quarterfinal match against Paul Beck of Mishawaka. The sophomore, who defeated Dylan Hall (40-7) of Evansville Harrison 3-0 in Friday night's opening round, is 42-3 on the season and ranked seventh in the state.

Kenney, the No. 3 wrestler at 103 pounds, has had success against ranked opponents thus far in the tournament, pinning No. 6 Jacob Armantrout of Muncie Southside in the regional semifinal round and topping ninth-ranked Steve Gonzales of Delta in both the regional and semi-state championship matches.

The other two undefeated 103-pounders, Ethan Raley (30-0) of Indian Creek and Anthony Hawkins (39-0) from Crown Point also advanced Friday.[[In-content Ad]]
