The Pak-A-Sak store in Portland will host a KidCare identification event on Saturday, Sept. 4.

The event, which will include a photo take for a KidCare I.D. packet, will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the store, located at 1300 N. Meridian St.

Law enforcement personnel will be on hand distributing educational information.

The identification meets standards set by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Free milk and coffee will be provided during event hours.

VOLUNTEERS

Employees from 22 restaurants around the state — including the Portland Taco Bell/KFC store — recently donated more than 700 hours in labor to build a Habitat for Humanity home for a family in Kokomo.

A ceremony was held this week to present the home.

Ned Kirby, whose 22 restaurants include the Portland Taco Bell/KFC, provided transportation to and from the build site.

A total of 150 volunteers worked on the home, located at 716 E. Jefferson St. in Kokomo.

Kirtac Inc., a Taco Bell franchise organization headed by Kirby, donated $20,000 in cash and materials, as well as labor.

TYSON FACING SANCTIONS?

Tyson Foods Inc. may be facing a fine for allegedly failing to disclose about $1.7 million in perks to Don Tyson, the retired chief executive of the company and its biggest shareholder.

The Wall Street Journal reported this week that Don Tyson has reimbursed $1.52 million given in fiscal years 1997 through 2003.

Tyson will have an opportunity to contest any recommendation from the Security and Exchange Commission before final action is taken.

DEGREE CHANGED

Officials at the Lake Campus of Wright State University (Celina, Ohio) recently announced a restructuring of the college’s computer aided drafting/design program.

The university also recently announced a reciprocity agreement that allows students from 12 eastern Indiana counties — including Jay, Adams, Blackford and Randolph — to pay Ohio resident tuition. That represents a possible savings of more than $24,000 for a full-time student over four years.

Registration is now underway for fall classes, which begin Sept. 7.

A bank with a local branch ranked fifth among most active lenders in Indiana through programs of the United States Small Business Adminstration.

Old National Bank ranked fifth on the list, which was topped by National City Bank. Capital One Federal Savings Bank was second, followed by Star Financial Bank and Fifth Third Bank.

The amount of small businesses receiving loans through the first 10 months of fiscal year 2004 increased 17 percent over the same period for 2003.

Old National made 57 loans with a total gross value of $6,922,130 through that 10 month period.
