Klopp, Habegger lead Starfire boys (01/31/07)

South Adams roundup

BERNE - Justin Klopp and Alex Habegger carried the South Adams swim team to another victory, each winning a pair of events and teaming to lead two winning relays. The efforts of the pair of underclassmen lifted the Starfire boys to an 84-77 victory Monday over the DeKalb Barons.

Klopp, a sophomore, took care of the sprints for South Adams, picking up his first win in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.17 seconds. He also took the top spot in the 100 freestyle at 52.54.

Habegger finished first in the 100 butterfly by nearly 15 seconds in 1-minute, 4.22 seconds. The freshman also led a one-two effort with teammate Kyle Affolder in the 100 breaststroke, reaching the wall in 1:11.17.

Klopp and Gresla also teamed with junior John Gresla and Justin Sommer to win the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:58.60. The same group took first place with a time of 1:44.42 in the 200 freestyle relay.

Gresla picked up the team's only other victory, taking the 200 medley relay in 2:25.20 with Affolder second.

Boys basketball tops UC

UNION CITY - South Adams' boys basketball team put together its second three-game winning streak of the year Tuesday, knocking off the Union City Indians 51-48.

The Starfires, who topped Garrett (2-13) and Southern Wells (2-11) in their previous two outings, took a five-point lead after the opening quarter and were still up by three at the half. They increased their advantage to five with eight minutes to play and held on for the three-point win.

Jordan Sharp and Andrew Caffee shared the team lead for South Adams (7-6), each scoring 14 points. Darin Toland came up with six of his 11 points in the fourth quarter.

Cager girls fall

NORTH MANCHESTER - The South Adams girls basketball team slipped to 3-15 Monday with a 65-32 loss to the Manchester Squires.

After scoring just four points in the opening quarter, the Starfires gave up 20 in the second for a 20-point halftime deficit. They allowed Manchester (15-4) to shoot 23-of-46 (50 percent) in the defeat.

Andrea Moser paced South Adams with nine points and nine rebounds. Kayla Coblentz had seven points and three assists.

Karen Bollenbacher scored six points as the Starfires dropped the junior varsity game, 24-20.[[In-content Ad]]
