Knights dethrone No. 4 Jay (04/23/03)
Local Roundup
Norwell apparently wasn’t too impressed with Jay County’s No. 4 ranking or its 7-0 record. The Knights promptly knocked the Patriots from the ranks of the unbeaten Tuesday, scoring a 10-0 six-inning victory.
Norwell took the lead with a run in the first inning and was never challenged by the Patriots, who managed just three hits. The Knights scored three times in the third inning and turned the game into a blowout with two more runs in the fifth and four in the sixth.
Jay County starter Trent Bailey was victimized by errors and walks, giving up seven runs — three earned — in five innings as he walked seven batters. He allowed four hits while striking out five.
Cameron Hummel picked up two hits for the Patriots, and Nick Timmerman had one.
Jay County (7-1) will try to regroup today when it hosts Fort Wayne Wayne at 4:30 p.m.
Two more for Sorg
Long-time South Adams football coach Kirk Sorg will continue to walk the sidelines for the Starfires.
Sorg received a two-year contract extension at Tuesday night’s meeting of the South Adams school board of trustees. He was approved by a unanimous 7-0 vote.
Patriots top Winchester
Winchester scored a run for every hit it managed off Mark Kelly Tuesday, but the Jay County junior varsity baseball team (4-4) provided enough offense of its own to come away with a 5-3 victory.
Kelly tossed a solid three-hitter, but the Golden Falcons took advantage of three walks as well to score runs in the first, third and fifth innings. However, Kelly picked up the win as he struck out seven batters in seven innings.
Jay County scored twice in the second inning and once in the third, fourth and sixth. Josh Shatto had two triples and a double, and Kelly, Adam Brandt, Nathan Miller and John Retter each added two hits.
Wrestling in Portland
International Pro Wrestling will hold a show in Portland April 26 at the Jay County Boys/Girls Club Community Center.
