Lady Patriots edge Norwell (11/27/04)
JCHS girls basketball
At the end, it wasn’t much of a lead.
But it was enough.
Jay County’s Lady Patriots held off an always competitive Norwell squad through four tough quarters, but a last minute 3-pointer by the Lady Knights couldn’t erase a 6-point margin.
“It was a hard fought game,” said coach Kirk Comer of the 50-47 win Friday which boosts Jay County to 5-1 for the still-young season.
“We’re continuing to get better,” he added. “Bluffton’s going to be another tough game Tuesday. We’re gonna have to have another good night.”
Bluffton knocked off Norwell by 8 points earlier this season.
The Lady Knights led 13-11 at the end of the first quarter, but Jay County outscored Norwell 14-10 in the second to go into the half with a 25-23 lead. After a tight third quarter, it was JCHS on top 36-35.
Jamie Bruggeman led Jay County in scoring with 19. Sara Garringer racked up 11 points.
Both Lisa Weitzel and Markie Runyon scored 7, with two of Runyon’s points coming on a pair of crucial fourth quarter free throws.
In all, Jay County hit 15 2-pointers and four 4-pointers, hitting 8 of 15 from the line.
Both the JV and freshman squads were also victorious.
The JV final was Jay County 36, Norwell 23. In the freshman game, it was Jay 33, Norwell 18.
