Lancaster leads WJ (09/15/04)

DUNKIRK — Andrew Lancaster racked up 95 yards on his three touchdown runs, leading the West Jay eighth grade football team to a 28-12 victory over South Adams. The seventh grade team finished in a 6-6 deadlock with the Starfires.

Lancaster scored the final three touchdowns for the eighth grade team (2-1), running in from 25 yards and twice from 35 yards. Alan Brown had the other score on a 3-yard run, and Shay White took the ball into the end zone for a pair of two-point conversions.

The seventh grade team (0-2-1) got its lone touchdown in the second quarter on a 2-yard run by Drew Locke. South Adams scored to tie the game in the fourth quarter.

Josh Beaty had an interception for the Eagles.

Chief spikers cruise

PORTLAND — The East Jay volleyball teams scored a couple of quick victories over Montpelier Tuesday. The seventh graders were dominant in a 21-1, 21-7 victory, and the eighth graders followed with a 21-10, 21-19 win.

Lindsey Wellman scored 19 consecutive points for the seventh grade team in its second game. Seven of her points came on aces.

Pazia Speed scored all of her five service points on aces, and also had two kills. Jamie Klinger added three points.

Sarah Westgerdes paced the eighth grade team with seven points, including two aces, and two kills. Amy Alig also had two kills, and Cori Vormohr finished with five assists.

Elizabeth Walker also had a big day for the seventh grade team as it placed second at the West Jay Invitational Saturday. She had six aces in a victory over South Adams and five more in a win over West Jay.

Mills cruises

DUNKIRK — Brady Mills came up with the best finish for the West Jay cross country teams Tuesday, winning the eighth grade boys race as they took on Winchester Driver. The girls team took a 25-30 loss, and neither boys team had enough runners for a team score.

Mills won the eighth grade race in 11-minutes, 11 seconds. Ty Fullenkamp was the only other West Jay runner in the race, finishing in 15:13.

Kelly Weaver paced the West Jay girls with her second-place finish in 13:06. Kristen Selvey was fourth in 13:26, with Anneliese Jetmore fifth in 13:33.

Brittany Burris placed 11th in 14:23, and Carly Weaver was 16th in 17:05.

Chris Mooney was second in the seventh grade boys race in 12:20. Jeremiah Cotherman followed in fourth in 12:41.[[In-content Ad]]
