Large firms have local ties (06/24/06)

Indiana Business magazine named the 50 largest public companies in Indiana in its June issue, listing six companies with local ties.

Marsh Supermarkets, based in Indianapolis and owner of LoBill Foods, ranked highest of the six at 13th, with total revenue reaching $1.74 billion in 2005.

Elkhart-based CTS Corp., which is phasing out its Berne plant, ranked 24th, with $617 million in total revenue in 2005. In 29th place was Franklin Electric, based in Bluffton. The maker of electric motors had a total revenue of $439.6 million in 2005.

Three bank holding companies with local connections also made the list. Old National Bancorp, out of Evansville, ranked 26th, with total revenue in 2005 of $585 million. In 38th place is First Merchants Corp., based in Muncie, with a total revenue of $211 million and in 48th place is MainSource Financial Group, based in Greensburg, with a total revenue in 2005 of $97.8 million.

New roles at PMMI

Preferred Medical Management Inc., Portland, announced this week the appointment of three new employees.

Jennifer Hartley has been named the company’s executive liaison and will serve in a cross-functional reporting role within the Myron family of corporations. A resident of Jay County, she has spent the last seven years with the engineering and design team of Workhorse Custom Chassis.

Robert Green has been named PMMI’s director of information technology. Now a resident of Wabash, he holds a degree in computer science from The Ohio State University. He has extensive experience in software design and development, including the development of application software for a medical records system.

Angie Sprunger, a rural Jay County resident, has been named PMMI’s coding/clinical specialist. Born and raised in Berne, she has worked as both a respiratory therapist and as a medical case worker. She has also received extensive training on federal privacy regulations and has served as a privacy officer for the past four years.

soft job market

Results of a Manpower Employment Outlook Survey predict a modest hiring pace in East Central Indiana for the third quarter of 2006.

According to the survey, 20 percent of companies interviewed plan to hire more employees from July to September, and 13 percent plan to reduce their payrolls.

The majority of employers, 57 percent expect to maintain current staff level and 10 percent are uncertain of their future hiring plans.

This compares with 31 percent of employers nationally who plan to hire and 6 percent who expect to reduce staff.

In the third quarter of 2005 in East Central Indiana, 27 percent of companies planned to increase staff and only 7 percent planned to reduce staff.

The survey also revealed that job prospects seemed best in construction, non-durable goods manufacturing and finance, insurance and real estate, while plans to reduce staff were observed in services and public administration industries.

Information

session planned

The Anderson University MBA program will offer two informational sessions this week for those interested in learning more about a Masters of Business Administration degree.

The first is being held today from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Noblesville Public Library. The second will be Tuesday, June 27, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Lawrence Branch Public Library.

The MBA program is designed for the working professional with evening and summer classes available and is taught at five sites in Carmel, Lawrence, Fishers, Anderson and Keystone.

The program, which currently has more than 200 active students and 700 alumni, is ranked in the top 5 percent of graduate business schools in Indiana based on enrollment by the Indianapolis Business Journal.

Critical care supervisor

Bluffton Regional Medical Center has named Jon Grandstaff-Dunphy, RN as director of critical care services, including the emergency department and intensive care unit.

Grandstaff-Dunphy has been employed at the hospital the previous two years patient safety coordinator and house supervisor in the emergency department.

Workforce board

meeting scheduled

The Eastern Indiana Region VI Regional Workforce Board meeting will be held Wednesday, June 28, at the IU East Danielson Learning Center, 300 Trojan Lane, room 108, New Castle.

On the agenda is discussion of the strategic skills initiative, Congressman Mike Pence’s job fair and luncheon, and corporate name discussion.

Chamber elects

new board members

The Portland Area Chamber of Commerce recently elected Kyle Cook, a 2006 graduate of Ball State University’s entrepreneur program, to its board.

Cook is currently employed at Cook’s Nursery and plans to one day take over the family business. He is also a mentor for John Jay Center for Learning Entrepreneur Boot Camp participants.

His term will expire in 2007.

In addition, president of the board Ryan Vannatter, who served on the board of directors since 2002, has been replaced by Steve Zielinski, and Mark Goodman has been elected to the position of vice president of the board, which was formerly held by Zielinski.

Chamber meetings

The Portland Area Chamber of Commerce will not hold Business After Hours in July or August.

The September Business After Hours will be hosted by Meshberger Brothers Stone Corp.

The next chamber merchants meeting will be Wednesday, June 28, at 7:30 a.m. in the Community Resource Center.

The Vintage Motor Bike Show and Engine Show plans will be on the agenda.

Employees to

receive federal aid

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development announced Friday that the U.S. Department of Labor ruled that former employees of York Metal Casket Assembly can receive federal Trade Adjustment Assistance.

TAA funds are available at the state level through the Indiana Department of Workforce Development and are intended for workers who are displaced due to foreign imports or shifts in production out of the country.

Employees who have separated or will separate from the company between January 25, 2005 and February 13, 2008 are eligible for the program.
