A local woman who has served as executive director of Jay-Randolph Developmental Services, Inc. for many years has announced her retirement.

Anita Young's retirement will become effective Jan. 5.

Young was hired in 1973 as teacher/director of the Early Developmental Training Program. In this position, she helped develop the first local services for preschool-aged children with developmental disabilities.

She was appointed interim executive director of JRDS in 1982, and shortly after was hired for the position. She has worked at the JRDS administrative offices on East Water Street in Portland for the last 24 years.

Young graduated from Portland High School in 1958. She later received a bachelor's degree in education from Earlham College, and a master's degree from Ball State University in education and counseling.

A reception for Young, who has worked for the company for 34 years, will be held closer to her retirement date.

Casino night

The Portland Area Chamber of Commerce will hold a casino night Nov. 4 at Bearcreek Farms.

The event will be from 7 p.m. until midnight. The theme for the evening will be the 1920s. Those who attend are welcome to dress accordingly. The cost is $25 per person, and $50 per couple. The cost includes $200 in gambling chips and dinner.

Seminar set

A QuickBooks seminar will be held Sept. 14 at the Community Resource Center, 118 S. Meridian St., Portland.

The morning session will be held from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and the afternoon classes will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Bollenbacher and Associates will be presenting the seminar. Topics covered include an overview of QuickBooks, how to set up accounts, bill payments, accounts payable, how to record credit cards and payroll and reports.

The cost for Portland Area Chamber of Commerce members is $50 for one session, or $75 for both. Cost for non-members is $70 for one session, and $95 for both.

Golf outing planned

The 11th Annual Randy O. Poole Memorial Golf Outing will be held Sept. 9 at the Portland Golf Club.

Registration begins at noon, and the shotgun start is at 12:30 p.m. The purse is $1,000. Cost is $200 per team, which includes green fees, cart rental, lunch and prizes.

Applications accepted

The Portland Foundation's Women's Giving Circle is accepting grant applications until 5 p.m. on Sept. 5.

Grants will be awarded in amounts ranging from $250 to $1,000 for 501 organizations. The funds will be given this fall for projects relating to women's' health.

Muncie factory cuts jobs

Borg-Warner Automotive of Muncie announced this week it will layoff 76 employees to avoid a temporary plant shutdown.

The company's layoffs are due to declining customer orders.

Muncie has lost more than 3,000 manufacturing jobs since 2000, due to downsizing and closings. Borg-Warner makes transfer cases for Ford F-150 trucks and sport utility vehicles.

Earns honors

A Fort Recovery woman was honored at a Home and Garden Party rally held Aug. 10-12 in Dallas, Texas.

Joan Kaiser was given a pin, sash and tiara and was invited to a party for selling more than $50,000 in merchandise.

She also earned the Chairman's Consistency Award for selling more than $2,000 in goods per month.

Home and Garden offers a line of home decorating items.

Courses offered

The Portland Area Chamber of Commerce is offering two courses on Nov. 9, which will be held at the Community Resource Center, 118 S. Meridian St., Portland.

Managing and Motivating will be held from 8 to 11:30 a.m., and Dealing with Difficult People and Conflict will be from 1 to 4:30 p.m.

Among the items the managing class will discuss are attitudes, relationships, constructive discipline and communication. The goal is to teach managers how to be more effective leaders.

The other course, will teach people to be more effective in all situations. Items discussed include how to identify different personality types, communication techniques and how to resolve conflicts.

Cost for chamber members is $60 per session or $100 for both. Non-chamber member fees are $80 per course or $150 for both.

Named to ACEDC

A Decatur native has been tapped to serve as director of the Adams County Economic Development Corporation.

Larry Macklin, who currently serves as director of the Decatur Chamber of Commerce, is replacing Mike Ripley of rural Monroe who recently resigned to take another job.

Macklin is a former state senator and director of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. He also has served as Decatur's clerk-treasurer and owner of Macklin's Clothing in downtown Decatur.

Makes top 50

A Union City company has made the list of the top 50 hardwood mills.

Frank Miller Lumber ranked 37th in total production out of 4,000 mills in the United States. The list recently was published in the magazine "Timber Processing."

The company recently added a new breakdown line, which increased production by 45 percent.

New exams offered

The Portland Eye Center and office of Dr. David Fullenkamp is now offering the Optomap Retinal Exam and the EPIC-2100 Vision Diagnostic System.

These tests use digital accuracy to improve diagnostic eye care and reduce the chance that a patient will need to have a diluted eye care exam. They examine the retina to check for problems.

The Portland Eye Center is an affiliate of The Eye Care Group.

Locally grown

Marsh Supermarkets, Inc., is supporting Indiana and Ohio farmers by selling their produce at Marsh stores.

The program called "Fresh Produce - Locally Grown" is now in its 13th year. Now through October, items such as corn, tomatoes, asparagus, green peppers, cucumbers, zucchini and yellow squash will be sold at Marsh stores.

Marsh also operates 38 LoBill Foods stores and 154 Village Pantry convenience stores, including one of each in Portland.

New chassis

Workhorse Custom Chassis of Union City recently announced that the company has begun to manufacture Universal Fuel Option chassis.

The new platform is a rear-engine chassis which offers the choice of gas or diesel engines for recreational vehicles.
