Expansion takes toll
Though Wal-Mart’s stock is down, the retailer says it will continue its strategy of opening new, larger stores to compete with older ones, as will be seen in Portland when the new Super Wal-Mart opens this summer.
According to the Wall Street Journal, new stores opened in a market already being served by an older Wal-Mart location report sales averaging two percentage points less that stores in markets without competing locations.
In the fiscal year ending January 31, same-store sales grew only 3.4 percent, down from a late-90s peak of 9 percent, and though net income has risen 68 percent since 2002, stock is down 28 percent.
Though some feel Wal-Mart should slow expansion, execs have said it wouldn’t slow down; instead, Wal-Mart plans to expand its square footage globally by 8 percent this year.
A total of 370 stores are planned for opening this year, including a new SuperCenter in Portland, and more than 1,500 sites in the U.S. are in various stages of review for construction.
