Lebanon pair end season for Evans and Rigby (10/18/04)

INDIANAPOLIS — Throughout the tournament, the Patriots seemed to turn up their energy level after winning their fourth game. Saturday, Lebanon turned the tables on them.

Jay County’s Randy Evans and Tyler Rigby jumped out to a 4-2 lead, but lost 6-4, 6-3 to Joseph Swanson and Ben Hinds of Lebanon at the doubles regional at Indianapolis North Central.

Evans and Rigby led 4-2 in the first set in the cold and windy conditions, but Swanson and Hinds came back. The Lebanon pair won the next four games to grab the first set and the momentum.

The Patriot pair still managed to tie the second set at 3-3, only to have Swanson and Hinds win the next three consecutive games to finish the match.

Evans and Rigby finished this season with an 18-5 record.

Jay spikers 0-3

MARION — The Jay County volleyball team went 0-3 at the Marion Invitational Saturday as its closed the regular season. The Patriots lost 25-11, 23-25, 25-18 to the host Giants, 25-20, 25-19 to Northfield and 25-20, 25-23 to Eastbrook.

Erin St. Myers led Jay County (9-24) on the day with 18 kills, 10 more than anyone else on the team. She was second on the team with 27 digs and eight points as she finished a perfect 18-of-18 serving.

Kelly Sautbine had 33 digs, Jamie Walker scored 12 points and Shannon O’Dell had eight kills.

St. Myers racked up seven kills and nine digs in the loss to Marion. Leah Gasparovic had seven assists.

Sautbine got 18 of her digs in the loss to Eastbrook, a team which has just four losses on the season. Erica Clark notched 10 assists, Shannon O’Dell had six kills and Walker scored five points.

St. Myers notched six more kills against Northfield, and Walker had six points. Sautbine picked up 10 digs, and Clark had four assists.

Jay County will play Class 3A No. 7 Delta in sectional semifinal action Saturday at Delta at 12:30 p.m.

EJ 1-2 at invite

PORTLAND — The East Jay volleyball team finished its season Saturday with one win and two losses as it hosted the East Jay eighth grade invitational. The Chiefs topped Bluffton 25-19, 25-20, but lost to South Adams 25-14, 25-23 and Muncie Wilson 25-22, 25-8.

Mackenzie Loy and Cori Vormohr led the way in the victory, scoring 12 and eight points respectively. Vormohr had seven assists and two kills, and Loy added six digs.

Briann Saxman had five digs, and Sarah Westgerdes added two kills.

Loy also had five points and three digs in the loss to South Adams. Kaelee Keller had seven digs, and Abby Boggs followed with six.

Westgerdes had nine kills, and Jamie Heaps added four points.

Vormohr posted five assists, four points and two kills against Wilson. Westgerdes added seven digs and four kills.

Loy had 13 digs, and Megan Logue notched a pair of blocks.

Jay opens winter season

MUNCIE — The Jay County Winter Swim Team opened the season at the Duck-Tacular Swim Invitational Saturday with Annie Vormohr picking up two wins at the event at Delta High School.

Vormohr, who was one of five Jay County swimmers to earn a victory, took first in the 8-and-younger girls 100-meter individual medley and 50-meter freestyle. She also added second place finishes in the 25-meter freestyle and the 25-meter butterfly.

Sophie Bader gave Jay County a third win in the 8-and-younger girls category, taking first in the butterfly. Levi Hummel was the winner of the 8-and-younger boys 25-meter butterfly.

Vormohr and Bader also teamed with Amelia Freeman and Rylee Clemmons to win the 8-and-younger girls 100-meter medley relay and the 100-meter freestyle relay. Hummel, Jesse Sutton, Sok Vormohr and Adam Young placed first in the 8-and-younger boys 100-meter medley relay.

Wiley Young added a victory in the 10-and-younger boys 200-individual medley. Mary Hudson, swimming in her first winter swim meet, won the 10-and-younger 50-meter breaststroke.

Also adding top-three individual finishes for Jay County were Clemmons, Freeman, Mitchel Kaverman, Emilee Miller and Sam Miller.

Tourney winners

There was a three-on-three basketball tournament at Loblolly Days last month, with the team of Caleb Seiderer, Cody Hicks, Brett Bothast and Dustin Garmon took the title in the 13-18-year-old division. Winning the 18-and-older bracket were Jim Ainsworth, Kerry Jellison, Mike Flores and Pat Wilhelm.

Sectional tickets

Tickets to Jay County’s sectional opening football game at Muncie Central will go on sale Wednesday.

They will be available in the JCHS athletics office Wednesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Friday from 8 to 11 a.m. Tickets are $5.[[In-content Ad]]
