Lee wins two as Pats top AC (02/10/04)

With a win Monday, the Jay County boys swim team kept its chances alive for a sixth straight season of .500 or better.

The Patriots picked up a 99-67 victory over the Adams Central Jets to improve to 4-5 on the year.

They will try to even their mark in their final dual meet of the season when they host Fort Wayne Northrop today at 6 p.m.

Junior Derick Lee paced Jay County, scoring two of the team’s seven wins.

Lee got perhaps the biggest win of the night, edging Corey Smith of Adams Central in the 100-meter butterfly. He scored the victory by just 11 hundredths of a second, reaching the wall in 1-minute, 14.49 seconds.

He also added a victory in the 200-meter individual medley with a time of 2:52.72.

Matt Peterson dominated the 100-meter backstroke, winning with a time of 1:13.60. Josh Hawn took first in the 500-meter freestyle in 7:30.23.

Peterson and Hawn also joined Joseph Vormohr and Dave Johnston to win the 400-meter freestyle relay in 4:42.90 for the Patriots’ lone relay win of the night.

Other victories for Jay County came from Todd McCowan in diving with 156.40 points, and Daniel Fisher in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:17.74.

Jay freshmen win

Jay County’s freshman boys basketball team let its lead slip away, but still pulled off a 32-31 victory over the Muncie Southside Rebels Monday.

Up by five at halftime, the Patriots pushed their lead to 25-19 after three quarters. However, Southside rallied back to lead by one in the final minute.

After a timeout John Wenger came up with a steal and hit a pair of free throws to give Jay County the lead. The defense stood strong to hold on for the win.

Wenger had an outstanding game, finishing with 18 points. Rhett Retter had seven, Casey Waters added five and Kaleb Carpenter notched two.

Jay falls to Delta

The Jay County middle school swim teams each lost to Delta Monday, with the girls team suffering a tight 94-89 defeat while the boys lost 101-78.

Cori Vormohr had a record-breaking meet despite the loss, snapping a couple of her own team records.

The seventh grader destroyed her own mark in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing in 2-minutes, 5.62 seconds. She beat her previous record by more than 5.5 seconds.

She also snapped broke her standard in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:14.38.

Vormohr teamed with Kelci Reed, Briann Saxman and Ivy Simons to add a victory in the 300-yard freestyle relay.

The only other victory for Jay County was turned in by Michelle Landfair. She took the 50-yard butterfly win in 35.63.

The boys team also had three individual victories and a relay win.

Lance VanSkyock took care of a couple of those. He won the 100-yard individual medley in 1:20.58 and the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:29.54.

Steven Kelly added an individual win in diving with 88.30 points.

VanSkyock and Kelly joined Trey Dunn and Chance Milligan to win the 200-yard medley relay.

Chiefs still perfect

The East Jay wrestling team kept its perfect record in tact Monday in an 84-6 destruction of Wes-Del.

Victories in the lower weight classes went to Cameron Pfeifer (80), Josh Lochtefeld (85), Casey Kenney (90), Mason Murphy (95) and Ben Theurer (100). Adding wins in the middle classes were James Abbott (105), Aaron Miller (110), David Jones (115), Cody Sutton (120) and Aaron Brenner (135).

In the upper weight classes East Jay winners were Matt Price (145), Brad Tipton (152), Kaleb Hemmelgarn (160) and Mitchell Martyne (175).

Spartans hammer Jay

The Jay County girls basketball team trailed early and the situation never improved. The Patriots dropped their final regular-season contest Saturday by a 74-32 score to the Connersville Spartans.

Connersville (13-7, 3-1 Olympic Athletic Conference) grabbed a 23-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. Jay County (11-8, 2-2 OAC) managed just five points in the second period and struggled throughout the contest in the 42-point defeat.

Leah Gasparovic paced the Patriots with nine points. Jamie Bruggeman and Lindsay Friddle each added six.

Kristin Malone led Connersville with 20 points.

Jay County will take on Mississinewa (3-16) in first-round sectional action tonight at Elwood at 7:30 p.m.
