Lehman wins two in SA defeats (01/30/04)

Heath Lehman had a good day. But, not enough other Starfires came up with victories.

The South Adams swim teams managed just seven wins in Thursday’s 22 events as they took a couple of losses to Fort Wayne Carroll. The boys team dropped a 107-74 decision, and the girls team lost 115-68.

Lehman continued his success this season, winning both of his individual events.

He took first in the 500-yard freestyle relay, winning by nearly eight seconds in 5-minutes, 36.98 seconds. He was also firs tin the 200-yard freestyle relay in 2:03.14.

Also adding wins for the boys team were Cory Simon and Carson Sprunger. Simon took the 100-yard freestyle in 56.64, and Sprunger was first in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:12.46.

However, the Starfires could not pick up a relay victory, dropping all three relay events in the boys and girls competition in the defeat.

South Adams’ girls team got wins from three different swimmers in its final dual meet of the season.

Haleigh Lehman earned the team’s first victory in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:07.48. Talitha Maven was first in the 100-yard freestyle in an identical time.

Channing Yoder took the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:20.24.

The Starfires boys team will host DeKalb Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The girls team heads to the Jay County sectional this week, with the preliminary round Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and finals to follow Saturday, Feb. 7.

Fort girls split

The Fort Recovery middle school girls basketball teams split a pair of games against the New Bremen Cardinals Thursday. The eighth grade team rolled to a 36-16 victory while the seventh grade team dropped a heartbreaking 30-29 decision against the undefeated Cardinals.

The eighth grade Indians rolled to a 10-3 lead after one period and never trailed. They are 7-3 thus far this season.

Jill Pottkotter paced Fort Recovery with 15 points and three rebounds. Jenn Nietfeld had six points, Val Fortkamp had four points and four rebounds and Sarah Braun added four rebounds.

The seventh grade team had a three-point lead after one quarter, but trailed 15-14 at halftime. The Tribe pulled even after three quarters before falling one point short of handing New Bremen its first defeat.

Joanna Snyder notched 11 points and six rebounds to lead Fort Recovery. Anne Koesters had eight points and seven rebounds, and Kinsey Wenning had eight points and six boards.

Indian boys fall

Fort Recovery’s middle school boys basketball teams each lost to the New Bremen Cardinals Thursday. The eighth grade team suffered a difficult 38-37 overtime loss, and the seventh grade team lost 38-31.

The Indians trailed by two points heading into the final quarter, but rallied to tie the game 30-30 at the end of regulation. Clint Tobe had 14 points, and Eric Lamm followed with seven.

New Bremen increased its lead slightly in each quarter of the seventh grade game. Toby Metzger finished with 13 points for Fort Recovery, and Wes Kahlig scored nine.

Rescheduled

The East Jay Middle School athletic events which were postponed Thursday have been rescheduled.

The boys basketball games against Muncie Wilson will be played at East Jay Tuesday at 6 p.m. The wrestling meet at Wes-Del has been rescheduled for Monday, Feb. 9 with weigh-in at 5 p.m. and wrestling to begin at 5:30 p.m.

AAU basketball
