Lehmans lead South Adams CC (09/24/03)

Five of the top six in each race was more than enough for the South Adams cross country teams to come away with victories over the Bluffton Tigers Tuesday.

The girls team took the top four spots with Haleigh Lehman setting the pace for a 16-43 victory. Heath and Michael Lehman topped the standings for the South Adams boys team as it blasted Bluffton 18-44.

Haleigh Lehman finished without a challenger, taking first by nearly a minute and a half in 16:03. Jamie Paul was next in 17:28, followed by Whitney Sprunger (17:42) and Katie Welsh (17:51).

Lauren Tooley rounded out the team scoring in sixth place in 18:15.

Heath Lehman led three Starfire boys runners who came in under 18:00 with a time of 17:37, with Michael Lehman four seconds back. Tim Conrad was fourth in 17:52, followed by Josh Sprunger in 18:31 and Tyler Clemens in 19:39.

South Adams’ girls dominated the junior high race, taking each of the first five finishing sports for a 15-50 win. The boys junior high team also won, 20-39.

Taylor Miller and Mattie Moore had matching times of 13:31 in finishing first and second respectively. Shannon Miller was next in 13:49, with Taylor Turner crossing the line in 14:03 and Rachel Sprunger in 14:22.

Adam McLaughlin won the boys race in 11:11. Chase Sprunger placed third in 12:09, with Marcus Hoover next in 12:17 and Justan Sommers in 12:47. Brian Lehman took seventh in 12:58.

The Starfires will host Fort Wayne Wayne and Fort Wayne Elmhurst Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

FR freshman roll

Lauren Wenning and Holly Stein had big matches again Tuesday as the Fort Recovery freshman volleyball team topped the Parkway Panthers 15-13, 15-17, 15-5.

Stein had 11 points to lead the team, and Wenning and Abby Niekamp each scored 10 points. Stein and Niekamp added 20 sets apiece, and Stein also had 12 digs.

Wenning contributed a team-high three blocks and added a couple of kills. Sam Staugler finished with four kills, and Brittany Brackman had nine digs.

Delphos powers past Fort

Fort Recovery’s middle school volleyball teams each fell to 6-4 after losses to the Delphos St. Johns Blue Jays Tuesday.

The eighth grade team lost 15-13, 15-10, and the seventh grade team dropped a 15-5, 15-6 decision.

Threes were wild for Ashley Grube as she finished with three kills, three blocks and three digs. Angie Wenning led the team with nine points, and put up 11 sets.

Heather Schmackers had 15 sets, and Amy Schoenlein had six points. Jill Pottkotter matched Grube with a team-best three kills, Lindsey Fortkamp had six digs, and Beth May notched three digs.

Kinsey Wenning notched team-highs of four points, two kills and two blocks for the seventh grade team. She also added three digs.

Anne Koesters and Chelsea Klenke scored three points apiece. Klenke had five sets, Joanna Snyder put up four, and Kelsey Wuebker had four digs.

Winter swim to start

The first practice for the Jay County Winter Swim Team will be Monday 9 beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Other practices during the first week of swimming will be Tuesday and Thursday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. All practices will be at the Jay County High School Pool.

The team is open to swimmers of all ages, but those interested must have some swimming experience. Schedules and other information will be distributed at the first practice.
