Lengerich leads Stars

BERNE — The Starfires turned in a strong start to their season.
Cam Lengerich won three events Thursday to lead the South Adams High School boys track team to a 74-48 victory in its season opener over the visiting Winchester Golden Falcons. Four different athletes took two events apiece to lead the girls team to an 83-39 win.
Lengerich swept the hurdle events for the Starfires, winning the 110-meter race in 15.9 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 44.6. He also took the long jump at 17 feet, 7 inches.
Brody Shane added victories in the 800 run and 1,600 run.
Leah Mitchel took the top spot in the shot put and discus for the girls team, and Michaela Rupp matched Lengerich with a sweep of the hurdles. Aleesha Goodwin was first in the 1,600 run and 3,200 run, and Kristen Muselman won the 800 run and the high jump.

Sutter wins two
CONVOY, Ohio — Elle Sutter won a pair of individual events and contributed to a relay victory Thursday for the Fort Recovery girls track team, which finished last in a three-team meet at Crestview.
The Indian boys were also third.
The host Knights won both the boys and girls competitions, and Continental was second.
Sutter dominated the long-distance events, taking the 3,200-meter run in 13 minutes, 23.9 seconds, with teammate Sam Tobe in second place. She was also first with a time of 6:08 in the 1,600 run.
Jessica Vogel and Caitlyn Huelskamp joined Sutter and Tobe to win the 4x800 relay in 11:40.01. Hannah Kaup, Sierra Pugh, Rachel Kaup and Rachel Pugh teamed for first place in the 4x100 relay in 59.79.
Derek Sutter was second for the boys team in the 1,600 run and 3,200 run with times of 5:16 and 11:18.3 respectively.

Jay boys win
DECATUR — Jay County’s boys track team scored 72 points Thursday to stay undefeated with wins over Adams Central (50) and host Bellmont (34). The Patriot girls scored 66 points as they suffered their first loss in nearly two years to Bellmont (76), which earned state medals in four events last season.
Dylan Cope and Zane Shreve each won a pair of events to pace the boys team (4-0). Cope took the top spot in the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 5 seconds, and the 1,600 run in 5:04 while Shreve won the 110 hurdles in 16.1 and the 300 hurdles in 42.4.
Both of the individual victories for the JCHS girls (3-1) came in field events with Ciera Barcus winning the high jump at 5 feet, 3 inches, and Sara Lennartz taking the discus at 94 feet, 2 inches.
Katie Snyder, Tasya Smith, Emma Laux and Alexis Myers won the 4x100 relay in 54.1.

Heitkamp leads Tribe
FORT RECOVERY — Angela Heitkamp won three events Thursday to lead the Fort Recovery Middle School girls track team to victory over St. Henry, Parkway and New Knoxville. The boys team finished third.
Heitkamp won a tight race in the 400 dash, taking the event by two tenths of a second over Olivia Niekamp of St. Henry in 1 minute, 9 seconds. She was also first in the 800 run in 2:50.1 and the 1,600 run in 6:16.9.
Cole Dues earned the only individual wins for the boys team, edging St. Henry’s Ryan Luttmer in the 200 dash by one tenth of a second in 28.7. He also took the high jump at 4 feet, 10 inches.
Other wins for the girls team came from Abby Wenning in the 100 hurdles in 18.7 and Lauren Gehle in the 100 dash in 14.1.
