Leo rallies past SA in fourth (01/21/05)

BERNE — South Adams came so close to its second win of the year. But, the Starfire boys basketball team couldn’t hold the lead in the fourth quarter, slipping to a 65-61 defeat against the Leo Lions.

It was the sixth straight victory for the Lions.

Leo (10-4) was tied for 16th in this week’s Class 3A voting by The Associated Press, but the Starfires controlled much of the contest.

Playing against its former coach, Cary Cogdell, South Adams (1-9) took control with a 21-point first quarter. It was up by nine at that point, and kept the lead at 35-29 at halftime.

The advantage slipped to five points at the end of the third quarter, but disappeared in the fourth. The Lions outscored the Starfires 18-9 in the final period to steal the victory.

Jason Souder carried Leo to the victory with 29 points. Evan Rieke added 10, Joel Bowerman had nine and Justin Hueber scored seven.

Kyle Alberson came off the bench to lead South Adams with 15 points. Brandon Liechty added 14 points, including a pair of 3-pointers as he scored 10 in the first quarter to help grab the early lead.

Jordan Sharp added 11 points, and Corey LeMaster scored nine.

FR boys top Flyers

FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery junior high boys basketball teams each topped the Marion Local Flyers Thursday night. The eighth graders took a 28-23 win while the seventh grade team was victorious by a 39-27 count.

Both teams got off to excellent starts, each holding Marion Local to two first-quarter points.

The eighth graders were up by six after the first period, and nudged the lead to seven with one quarter to play. They improved to 6-5 with the win.

Wes Kahlig set the pace with 11 points, and Toby Metzger added nine.

The Tribe seventh grade squad put up 14 points as it took command in the first quarter. The lead dipped to seven at the half, but the Indians pushed it back to double digits in the third quarter on the way to an 8-3 record.

Greg Kahlig and Josh Wendel each reached double figures with 12 and 10 points respectively. Craig Brockman added nine points.

Directions to Howe

Jay County’s girls basketball team will play at Indianapolis Howe Saturday at noon.

To get to Howe, take Ind. 67 south (or Ind. 67 south and Ind. 28 west) to I-69 south. Follow I-69 south to I-465, and take I-465 south for about nine miles.

Take exit 46 toward U.S. 40/Washington Street and travel about three miles. Turn left on S. Emerson Street and then right on Julian Avenue.[[In-content Ad]]
