Let's clean our county (3/4/04)
Opinion
Snow covers a multitude of sins.
At the top of the list? Littering.
Take a drive through the community this week, and it’s hard not to be embarrassed by what you’ll see.
While city of Portland crews were out running the street sweeper, there’s far more mess out to be found than a single street sweeper could begin to clean up.
Rural stretches of highway and county roads — particularly within a three- or four-mile radius of the Jay County Landfill — are occasionally appalling.
More routinely, fast food restaurant wrappers and cups and ubiquitous plastic bags are snagged in fencerows and floating in ditches at the side of the road.
Face it folks, coming out of winter, we look like a mess.
Given the weather, it’s entirely possible that a late-winter dose of blizzard conditions could cover it all up again.
But that just defers the inevitable.
It’s time to haul out the trash bags and get to work.
It’s the least we can do to make spring feel welcome. — J.R.[[In-content Ad]]
