Let's run a clean race (5/10/04)

Opinion

Indiana’s gubernatorial contest is already shaping up to be the most expensive in the state’s history.

Is it asking too much to request that it be as clean as it is costly?

Democrat Joe Kernan and Republican Mitch Daniels are — despite their many differences on policy and political philosophy — both honorable men.

Is it asking too much to request that their campaigns reflect that personal dignity?

Talk to Hoosier voters, and they’ll tell you they grew weary a long time ago of campaigns built upon knocking down the opposition.

They’re hungry for candidates who can explain — clearly, completely, and honestly — why they believe they’re the best-prepared to lead the state, without taking shots at the other guy on the ballot.

Money men and campaign consultants don’t seem to get that message, however. Every election year is marked by misrepresentation and mud-slinging.

Here’s our wish for 2004: That it be an exception to what has become the rule.

We’ve got good candidates. We have plenty of issues worth debating.

Now let’s have a campaign worthy of the voters. — J.R.
