Library continues expert series
Taking Note
Jay County Public Library will have two programs as part of its Local Expert series.
Environmentally Safe Cleaners will be presented Monday, Jan. 9, at 6:30 p.m. Learn how to make household cleaners that are good for the environment. Bring a plastic bowl for mixing and a box of baking soda. Please register by Jan. 4.
Mindfulness will be held Monday, Jan. 23, at 6:30 p.m. Learn about meditation, mindfulness and Buddhism.
Anyone wanting to share their knowledge of ebooks or another subject of expertise or teach a skill may call Molly at (260) 726-7890 to be part of the Local Expert series.
The Cook Book club will meet Monday, Jan. 9, at 6:15 p.m. to prepare snacks that can be served at Super Bowl parties.
The crochet club at Jay County Public Library will be held Tuesday, Jan. 24, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Bring your own supplies.
Prep classes
The John Jay Center will be offering prep classes for the SAT test on three consecutive Saturdays, Jan. 7, Jan. 14, and Jan. 21.
The first two sessions will be bookwork review, and the Jan. 21 session will be an online review of the SAT.
Any high school student hoping to improve his or her SAT scores is welcome. The registration deadline is Jan. 3.
There is a $25 registration fee which is applicable for the books that are required for the Jan. 7 and Jan. 14 sessions.
The workshops are intended to help students prepare in the English and math sections of the test in order to optimize scores and increase college and scholarship opportunities.

Time to meltdown
The Arthur and Gloria Muselman Wellness Pavilion at Swiss Village and the Berne Tri-Weekly News are sponsoring the fourth annual Village Meltdown in 2012, a contest that awards prizes to teams based upon weight loss and makes a cash donation to a charity chosen by the overall champion.
The contest begins with an initial weigh-in on Jan. 9 and concludes on March 16. Teams of two will compete to log the highest percentage of weight loss. Teammates need to register together at the Wellness Pavilion at Swiss Village in Berne before Jan. 9. The cost is $20 per team.

Competing
Jay County High School’s thespians will be competing at Huntington University on Saturday, Jan. 21, in the state thespian competition.
Twenty students will present acts 3 and 5 from “A Comedy of Errors” by Williams Shakespeare, as adapted by director Carol Knarr, JCHS drama teacher.
This is the first time JCHS thespians have advanced to the state level of competition. The trip and registration costs will be more than $1,500, and donations to help defray the expenses are being sought.
Competing students include Mitchel Dull, Hannah Lugar, Heather Lugar, Hope Lugar, Alexis Thomas, Arralina Naylor, Jessica Mills, Zach Bell, Morton Garringer, Laura Morrison, Ian McClung, Alysia Fennig, Holly Wellman, Alyssa VanSkyock, Ann Casey, Kelly Casey, Tiffany Ingle, Kyle Scott, Lydia Rowles, and Christina Williamson.
Directors sought
Jay County Civic Theatre is seeking applications from those interested in directing shows for the 2012-2013 season.
The play list includes El Phantismo in April, a murder mystery dinner theatre in October, A Christmas Story in December, a musical of Little Women in February of 2013, the musical Xanadu in May 2013, and a summer children’s workshop production of Winnie the Pooh in July of 2013.
