Liechty named president

Kent Liechty, who currently serves as executive vice president and head of lending, has been named the new president of First Bank of Berne.

He will replace current president Charles Isch, who announced his retirement earlier this year. Liechty will step into the role effective May 1.

Liechty is a Berne native and graduated from South Adams High School and received a degree in agricultural economics from Purdue University and then obtained his MBA from Indiana University in 2000.

He has been in banking for 18 years and joined First Bank of Berne in 1997.

Liecthy lives in Berne with his wife Teri, his son, Evan, and daughter, Riley.

Networking luncheon

The next Jay County Chamber of Commerce networking luncheon will be held April 27.

State Rep. Bill Davis (R-Portland) will present a legislative update.

The luncheon will begin at noon in the Jay County Hospital Cafeteria.

Profits up

Fast food chain operator Yum Brands, which owns Pizza Hut, Taco Bell and KFC, saw first quarter profit increases of more than 10 percent with help from international locations.

Yum locations in China saw profit increases of 37 percent to $176 million, making the region the most profitable sales region worldwide. The company earned $241 million.

Japan purchase

Glass producer Saint-Gobain has recently purchased a substantial stake in a Japanese cement company, securing most of the group's equity.

Saint-Gobain purchased a 43.7 percent stake in Taiheiyo Cement Corporation, a part of MAG company. Saint-Gobain now controls 87.3 percent of MAG's total equity.

MAG is Japan's leading glass wool manufacturer and Taiheiyo has inroads into the insulation market. Saint-Gobain is looking to play a part in new construction projects in Japan, focusing on environmental protection and energy efficiency.

Recognized

Dispatchers from the Indiana State Police Redkey District were recognized during National Public Safety Telecommunications Operators Week. Honored were Donna Denney (Jay County), Melody Davis, Shane Fisher and Mike Tinch (Randolph County), Tom Mayne (Wells County) and supervisor Beth Roberts (Henry County).

TV ads

POET launched a TV ad campaign Monday highlighting the efforts to reduce dependency on foreign oil through ethanol production.

The ad campaign has three ads featuring a farmer, a scientist and plant manager explaining their roles in fuel production.
