The regular season ended a bit early Monday for the Jay County Summer Swim Team.
Their final dual meet was halted because of lightning before a third of the events could be completed with Jay County leading South Adams 234-171 at Portland Pool. The teams will face off again in Berne Saturday as South Adams hosts the Wabash Valley Conference Championships.
Sisters Eliza and Sophie Bader were the only Jay County swimmers to win multiple events at the shortened meet. They won the long freestyle and butterfly in the 8-and-younger and 13-14-year-old divisions respectively.
Adding victories in the long freestyle were Lance McCowan, Erica Hathaway, Daniel Ostrowski, Sydney Mathias, Christian Vormohr, Eme Miller and Neal Fennig. Tayler Smeltzer, Alex Bader and Quinn Blakely earned wins in the butterfly.
Rogers, Markwell lead
DUNKIRK — Lilly Rogers and Connor Markwell led the scoring Monday as the Ocean Division of the West Jay Community Center Summer Soccer League closed out the season.
Rogers tallied both of her team’s goals as the Whales (4-1-1) wrapped up the division title with a 2-1 victory over the Sharks. Markwell scored two goals to lead the Sting Rays to a 3-0 victory over the Squidz.
On Saturday, Zaaron Lee racked up five goals as the Lions defeated the Jaguars 8-4. Matt Paquett scored three times for the Lions, and Kelli Neff had all for goals for the Jaguars.
Also scoring three goals Saturday were Hunter Shoemaker and Kailee Denney.
Painter, Barton win
Gary Painter and Darlene Barton took the top spots in the Colavita-Zipp Speed Weaponry time trial race hosted in Portland by AeroCat High Performance Bicycles.
Painter, 55, Fort Wayne, finished first in 42 minutes, 50 seconds in the 20-mile event. Barton, also of Fort Wayne, led the women’s division of the race.
Kurt Spoerle and Gregg Ness placed second and third respectively in the men’s division, and Jeanette Shires and Sharla Berger followed Barton in the women’s division.[[In-content Ad]]
