Local artist to present exhibit (07/07/06)

“Multiples,” an exhibit by local ceramic artist Zach Medler, will begin today at the Hugh N. Ronald Gallery at Arts Place in Portland. Medler describes his work as “Ceramics in a different light.”
Medler earned a master’s degree in ceramics from Purdue University, is an instructor for the Innovations program and serves as an Artist in Residence at Arts Place. He is also teaching Arts in the Parks classes this summer in Jay, Adams and Mercer counties.
Some of his students’ work will be shown in the exhibit.
The exhibit will continue through Aug. 19 and is sponsored by Medler’s Furniture. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Officers elected
The Fort Recovery Education Association elected officers for 2006-07 at their final meeting for the school year. Elected were Cindy Moorman, president; Kathy Jutte, vice president; Jill Walter, secretary-treasurer; high school representative, Lisa Ontrop; middle school representative, Becky Miller; elementary school representative Shelly Vaughn and OEA representative Marg Dilworth.
Minnetrista events
Several events are coming up at Minnetrista Cultural Center in Muncie.
A family campfire and raccoon roundup will be Saturday, July 15 and Friday, July 28, both from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Come roast marshmallows over the campfire and learn about raccoons. Registration deadline is Saturday for the July 15 event and July 21 for the July 28 event. The cost is $7.
A family workshop will be Saturday, July 22, from 2 to 5 p.m. Strawberry jam will be made and participants will get four half-pint jars. The cost is $25 and registration deadline is Saturday, July 15.
Flower power, a program for four- and five-year-olds, is Tuesday, July 18, from 9 to 10 a.m. and 4 to 5 p.m. Children will get to use magnifying glasses and bug nets to study flowers and bugs. The cost is $2 and registration deadline is Friday, July 14.
The PBS Program club, where participants watch and discuss great PBS shows, will be held Wednesday, July 19, and Wednesday, Aug. 16, both from 2 to 4 p.m. Registration is required to receive a free copy of each month’s program to view before the club meets. The cost is free.
Learn how to make homemade ice cream in a coffee can on July 25, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. An assortment will be made to take home. Registration deadline is Sunday, July 23 and the cost is $10.
Make backyard floral arrangements on Thursday, July 27, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Professional florists from The Flower Bin will demonstrate how to create flower arrangements and show how to cut flowers. Dinner will also be served. Registration deadline is Monday, July 24 and the cost is $20.
A show and tell program “Magic in the Air” will be Saturday, July 29, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Magician Ryan Demler will present an interactive magic show. The cost is free.

National Honor Roll
Ginger Roughia, Bryant, has been accepted as a member of the National Honor Roll’s Outstanding American Teachers for 2005-06. She is a sixth grade Social Studies teacher at South Adams Middle School. Her name will appear in the NHR Outstanding American Teachers 2005-06 Commemorative Edition.
Study panel
Betty S. Drinkut, Pennville, a science teacher at Marion High in Marion, recently participated in a study panel for biology in Baltimore, Md. The study was conducted by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and the Education Testing Services. The panel established national benchmarks on the Praxis Series teacher licensure tests.
Wins medal
Thomas Brosher, Dunkirk, a student at Ivy Tech Community College in Muncie, was recently awarded the postsecondary gold medal in principles of technology. He participated in the Skills-USA National Leadership and Skills Conference held in Kansas City, Mo., where students demonstrated in 84 hands-on occupational and leadership contests such as robotics, criminal justice, aviation maintenance and public speaking.
Receives degree
Stacy Bihn, Fort Recovery, recently earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from the University of Toledo in Ohio.

Erik Loucks, Portland, received a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Manchester College in North Manchester.
Dean’s list
Eric Dues, Nick Kaiser and Kandas Lofton, all of Fort Recovery, were named to the dean’s list for the winter quarter at the University of Cincinnati.
Richard Wood and Lorraine Wenning made the dean’s list for the spring semester at the University of Toledo in Ohio.
President’s list
Stacy Bihn, Nicole Elking and Derrick Huelskamp, all of Fort Recovery, have made the president’s list for the spring semester at the University of Toledo in Ohio.
Share your quilt
Plans are underway for the 2006 Swiss Days Quilt Show to be held during Berne Swiss Days
Quilts of all sizes and kinds such as baby, antique, anniversary, wall, embroidered, appliqué, and crazy quilts, are included in the show.
To enter a quilt, bring them to the South Adams High School commons area on Thursday, July 27, between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Quilts may be picked up when the show is over on Saturday, July 29, between 4:30 and 5 p.m.
A quilt challenge sponsored by Swiss Stitchers Quilting Guild is also part of the show.
All entries except for past winners are eligible for Viewer’s Choice awards.
Quilters wishing to sell their quilts may also enter them in the show and they will be placed in a special area and sold for a 5 percent commission.
Security protection is provided for quilts at all times.
