Local guard members leaving (12/31/03)
Unit departing Friday from Winchester
Members of a local Indiana Army National Guard unit that is headed for a peacekeeping mission in Bosnia will be departing from the Winchester Armory on Friday.
Approximately 100 members of platoons from Portland and Winchester of the 38th Infantry Divisions of the Indiana Army National Guard will be leaving for Camp Atterbury sometime between 10 and 10:30 a.m.
A public send-off is being organized, with a pre-determined route planned and free small-sized flags being given out to the first 400 people requesting them.
The Winchester Armory is located at 700 S. Western Ave.
Debbie Merchant, a teacher at Winchester Community High School who is helping to organize the send-off, said flags will be offered at the armory, at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument and in the parking lot of the Winchester Pizza King.
The flags are being provided by the Winchester Community Cultural Preservation Committee.
That route for the convoy will be: East on Orange Street, north on Main Street past the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, and east on Ind. 32 (Washington Street) to U.S. 27 South.
A release Tuesday from the Indiana Army National Guard said that the number of troops in the deployment has recently been reduced to 800 from its original level of 1,500.
Approximately 700 of the 800 guard troops are from units deploying from Connersville, Edinburgh, Hartford City, Indianapolis, Marion, Muncie, New Castle, Portland, Richmond, Shelbyville and Winchester.
Members of the 38th Infantry Division of the Indiana Army National Guard will be trained during January at Camp Atterbury, which is located about 40 miles south of Indianapolis in Johnson County.
The unit will then be shipped to Germany for more training in February before it deploys in Bosnia from March to September.
Bosnia, located in southeastern Europe, was part of Yugoslavia until it declared its independence in 1992, sparking a civil war that ended in 1995.
The country remains divided among Muslims, Croats and Serbs despite efforts of an international peacekeeping force in place since the end of the war.
Local guard units have not been sent to a war-torn area since World War II.[[In-content Ad]]
