Local student to appear in Who's Who (02/17/06)

Selena McKibben’s biography has been chosen to appear in Who’s Who Among Outstanding Middle School Students 2005-06 publication. She was chosen for her exceptional accomplishments achieved while in Middle School at East Jay.

McKibben is the daughter of Jake and Alma McKibben and the granddaughter of Rhonda Gillespy and Juanita DelRio, all of Portland.

Library events

A craft special will be held Saturday from noon until 4 p.m. at Jay County Public Library. Children may stop by anytime between those hours to make winter-themed crafts. Supplies and directions are provided to complete the craft independently. Children who need help should be accompanied by an adult.

Children’s story times will be Monday, Feb. 20, at 10 a.m. and Tuesday, Feb. 21, a 1 p.m. Four or five books will be read aloud, followed by a craft. Infants and older may attend, accompanied by an adult.

An after school exercise program for children will be Wednesday, Feb. 22, from 2:45 to 4 p.m. There will be 30 minutes of exercise, a drink and snack and an activity or story.

A toddler activity time will be Thursday, Feb. 23, at 9:30 a.m. There will be stories, toys, music and instruments to share.

Bloomfield Bee winners

Austin Muhlenkamp recently won the spelling bee at Bloomfield Elementary School. He is a fourth grade student and the son of Carl and Laurie Muhlenkamp, Portland.

The runner-up was McKayla Haines, a fifth grader and the daughter of David and Rene Haines, Bryant.



Spelling champs

East Jay Middle School students recently competed in the The Star Press Regional Spelling Bee.

The winner was Chelsea Burns, a seventh grade student and the daughter of Kimberly Markle, Portland.

The alternate was Tyler Freyburgher, an eighth grader and the son of David and Beth Freyburgher, Portland.

Geography winners

Dillon Easton won the Geography Bee at West Jay Middle School. An eighth grader, he is the son of Dale and Tami Easton.



Dean’s list

These area students recently made the dean’s list at Anderson University for the fall semester of 2005-06.

Lauren Elizabeth Budde, Rachel Kathryn McKee and Nicole Marie VanSkyock, all of Portland.

Katie L. Alberson, has been named to the National Dean’s List for the fall semester of 2005-06. She attends Indiana Wesleyan University.

Young heroes

The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes is seeking nominations for students ages eight to 18 who have shown leadership and courage in public service to people and our planet. Winners will receive $2,000 to support their service or for their education.

New club

State of the Heart Home Health and Hospice is forming an auxiliary club of volunteers to plan fundraisers, manage community events, attend county fairs and do public speaking. Members will be required to participate in only one fundraising event per year.

Project grants

America’s Promise and Youth Service America are awarding $1,000 grants to those between the ages of five and 25, to implement sustainable relief projects to support the hurricane relief efforts in the Gulf Region. Projects will be launched on National and Global Youth Service Days on April 21 through April 23.
