Local student wins contest

Taking Note

Thomas Dunn III, son of Thomas and Rita Dunn, Portland, competed in an essay contest entitled “If I Were Mayor, I Would...” earlier this summer. He was named a North Central Mayors Roundtable Regional Winner of the contest sponsored by the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns, an advocacy group who works together to enhance the knowledge and skills of their leaders, exchange information and combine resources so that they may influence policy decisions at the state and federal levels.

ROUNDTABLE MEETING

The quarterly regional rountable meeting for Region Five for Arts Place, Inc., will take place Thursday, Sept. 18, at the Richmond Art Museum, 305 Hub Etchison Parkway, Richmond, at 4 p.m.

The meetings are a discussion forum for all individuals with interest or expertise in the arts. Region Five includes Adams, Blackford, Delaware, Fayette, Grant, Henry, Jay, Madison, Randolph, Rush, Union and Wayne Counties.

The public is invited to attend.

AWARENESS PROGRAM

A dinner and program to raise awareness of ovarian cancer will be held Tuesday, Sept. 23, from 6-9 p.m. at the Outpatient Medical Pavilion, lower level, at Ball Memorial Hospital.

Registration begins at 5:45 p.m. followed by dinner and music. Dan Lopiccolo, M.D., V.C.W., will present Understanding and Detecting Ovarian Cancer at 6:30 p.m. Angie Szynski will give personal testimony at 6:55 p.m.

At 7 p.m., Treatment Decisions and Surgical Treatment will be presented by Greg Sutton, M.D., gynecological oncologist. Doyle Stephens, M.D., medical oncologist, will follow at 7:30 p.m. with First Line Chemotherapy and Immunotherapy. Sutton will again present at 8 p.m. with Adavances and the Future Treatment, and concluding the evening will be M. Kay Stickle, professor emeritus, Ball State University, will present Humor and the Art of Living with and after Cancer.

MINNETRISTA HAPPENINGS

The following activities are taking place at the Minnetrista Cultural Center in Muncie during the month of September.

• Fossil Finds of the Pipe Creek Sinkhole — Thursday, Sept. 4, 7-8:30 p.m. — Jim Farlow, IPFW professor of paleontology will discuss his research and fossil finds at the sinkhole near Swayzee.

• Science with Dinosaurs — Tuesday, Sept. 9, 6:-7:30 p.m. — Explore the galleries with a T. Rex Named Sue and participate in activities designed for kids in grades k-6. Cost is $10 per family.

• Monarchs for Families — Saturday, Sept. 13, 10 a.m. to noon — Learn how to identify and sex monarchs, catch them, tag them, and record necessary data to help scientists study these migrating butterflies. Cost is $5 per family.

• Brownie Try-it Badge, Plants — Saturday, Sept. 13, 10 a.m. to noon — Cost is $5 per person.

• Happy Trails: Roy Rogers and Dale Evans Memorabilia — Begins Saturday, Sept. 13 to Jan. 11 — A collection of art and objects relating to the time of the two actors careers.

• Cowboy Concert with KG and the Ranger — Saturday, Sept. 13, 2-3:30 p.m. — KG and the Ranger will sing and tell cowboy stories and perform rope tricks during their presentation. Cost is $4 per child; $6 per senior; $7 per adult. Exhibit admission is included.

• Concert Series: The Diane Marino Quartet — Saturday, Sept. 13, 7:30 p.m. — This quartet offers jazz sounds of Brazil, Latin and traditional modes. Bring blankets, lawn chairs and picnic baskets for the free concert.

• Concert Series: Stephen Helton & The Flint River Boys — Saturday, Sept. 20, 7:30 p.m. — This group brings high energy bluegrass and bluegrass gospel. Bring blankets, lawn chairs and picnic baskets for the free concert.

• Autumn Celebration at White River Gardens — Sunday, Sept. 21, 1-6 p.m. — The opening weekend of Autumn Celebration at the Indianapolis based gardens will feature Bonsai plants, vendors and supplies. The Minne-Trip will leave from the Center. Cost is $20 per person.

• Heritage Collection Tour — Sunday, Sept. 21, 2 p.m. — A behind-the-scenes tour of the Minnetrista Heritage Collection.

• Eco-Exploring in the Nature Area — Saturday, Sept. 27, 3-5 p.m. — Explore the wetlands, woodlands and grasslands in the nature area at Minnetrista. Cost is $5 per person.

• Open Space: Art About the Land — Begins Saturday, Sept. 27 through Oct. 26 — An art competition and exhibition recognizing East Central Indiana artists who receive inspiration from the land, or whose work celebrates the notion of open space as it relates to the land. A portion of the funds will go to help the Red-tail Conservatory.
