Taking Note
Area teachers, nominated by their students, were named in the eighth annual edition of “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, 2004.” Students were requested to nominate the one teacher from their entire academic experience who made a difference in their lives by helping to shape their values, inspire interest in a particular subject and challenge them to strive for excellence. Students also mentioned enthusiasm about their subject and the knowledge their nominated teachers demonstrated in the classroom.

AUTHOR
Bruce Fordham, a Jay County Arts Council visual artist from 1978 to 1979, has written his first novel entitled “Cherry Snow Cone.” The book, heavily based on Fordham’s own life and experiences in Vietnam, is about 18-year-old Wayne Truwell who gets assigned to the Vietnam riverboats during the war in 1969. The novel follows Wayne through his everyday life on the river, from dodging snipers to befriending the locals.
Fordham graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and now resides in Bloomington.
MINNETRISTA EVENTS
What’s that smell? will be Tuesday, Nov. 16, with two sessions. The first from 9 to 10 a.m. and the second from 4 to 5 p.m. Come discover how plants and animals use their scents to communicate. This program is for three year olds, an adult is not required. Cost is $5 per child.
A pioneer candle making workshop will be Saturday, Nov. 20, from 10 a.m. to noon. We’ll dip candles using the pioneer method (without the fire). Cost is $5. Registration deadline is Saturday, Nov. 13.
A Thanksgiving heritage necklace workshop will be Tuesday, Nov. 23, at Minnetrista Cultural Center. Two sessions will be held, the first from 9 to 10 a.m. and the second from 4 to 5 p.m. The program is for 3-year-old children and they must be accompanied by an adult. Necklaces will be made using natural and food items. Cost is $5 per child. Registration deadline is Tuesday, Nov. 16.
Magnificent mammals will be Wednesday, Nov. 24, from 4 to 5 p.m. Come see what makes mammals unique and search for them at Minnetrista. Cost is $5. Registration deadline is Wednesday, Nov. 17.
