Losing streak for Indians reaches seven games (01/26/04)

After opening 3-2 the Fort Recovery boys basketball team has hit a tough stretch, losing seven games in a row. The Tribe slipped to 3-9 and 1-3 in the Midwest Athletic Conference with a pair of defeats this weekend.

The Indians had some shooting difficulties against the MAC-rival Delphos St. Johns Blue Jays Friday in a 64-42 defeat, and couldn’t stay with the Lima Central Catholic Thunderbirds in the fourth quarter of a 56-48 loss Saturday.

Fort Recovery gave itself a chance against LCC, bouncing back from a seven-point halftime deficit to pull within one point at the end of the third quarter. However, the Thunderbirds outscored them 19-12 in the final period to take the victory.

Neither team shot very well as both finished at 39 percent, but LCC took the game at the foul line.

The Thunderbirds hit 19-of-25 free throw tries, shooting 15 more foul shots than the home team. Fort Recovery made just five of its 10 attempts.

Travis VanSkyock paced the Indians with 13 points. Sean Kahlig had nine points and eight rebounds, and Dusty Tobe scored eight points.

Tyler Wuebker grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds, and Ryan Staugler dished out four assists.

Fort Recovery shot just 32 percent against St. Johns, falling behind 33-20 at halftime and never recovering. The Blue Jays went 17-of-24 from the foul line while the Tribe shot just 1-for-7.

Tobe had 11 points and five rebounds, and Wuebker had 10 points and nine rebounds. Greg Faller finished with four assists, and Kahlig had two blocks.

Fort Recovery will play at New Bremen Friday at 6 p.m.

Stars fall short

The South Adams girls basketball team stayed right with the Woodlan Warriors for three quarter before falling apart in the fourth.

The Starfires led by three heading into the final period, but were outscored 24-7 in the fourth quarter in a 60-46 defeat.

Erin McCollum paced South Adams (3-13) with 15 points, and Kindle Inniger added 11. Brittany Moser had eight points, all at the foul line, but the Starfires shot just 24 percent from the field as a team. 4-11

Moser also added a team-high seven rebounds, and Julie Muhlenkamp grabbed six. Inniger and Kelly Mertz each had three assists, and McCollum notched three steals.

Woodlan (4-11) got 22 points from Kelly Bradtmueller. Natalia Burnside and Lindsey Bradtmueller added 14 and 13 points respectively.

Both Bradtmuellers grabbed 11 rebounds.

Hillary Bruick had seven assists and six steals.

South Adams will visit Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian Tuesday at 6 p.m.

FR JV loses pair

Fort Recovery’s junior varsity boys basketball squad lost both of its games this weekend. The Indians dropped a 64-34 decision to the Delphos St. Johns Blue Jays Friday, and fell to the Lima Central Catholic Thunderbirds 61-39 Saturday.

The Tribe was done in early in both games.

It scored just six points in each of the first two quarter and trailed 36-12 at halftime against St. Johns. It managed just five first-quarter points against LCC and trailed 37-16 at the half.

Stan Roessner set the pace for the Indians with seven points against the Blue Jays.

Jason VanSkyock had team highs of nine points and eight rebounds against the Thunderbirds.

Freshmen still winless

The Fort Recovery freshman boys basketball team is still searching for its first win after a 39-24 defeat against Celina Saturday. Kraig Wendel led the Indians (0-9) with 16 points.

Fort girls roll

Fort Recovery’s middle school girls basketball teams picked up a pair of wins Saturday. The eighth grade team got by Greenville 25-21, and the seventh graders scored a convincing 29-12 victory.

The eighth graders trailed by one at halftime, but held Greenville scoreless in the third quarter to edge into the lead. Val Fortkamp set the pace with 12 points, and Jill Pottkotter had seven points and 15 rebounds.

The seventh grade Indians limited Greenville to two points in each of the first two quarters as they grabbed a 19-4 halftime lead and rolled to the win. Anne Koesters had 11 points and seven rebounds, and Joanna Snyder notched eight points and seven rebounds.[[In-content Ad]]
