Ludy notches first RBI as pro

Local roundup

HAGERSTOWN, Md. — Josh Ludy had one of the most prolific run-producing seasons in Baylor University history. And it didn’t take him long to get his first RBI as a professional.
The 2008 Jay County High School graduate drove in the first run of his pro career Thursday as he helped the Lakewood (N.J.) BlueClaws to a 5-3 victory over the Hagerstown Suns.
Ludy’s RBI came on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly as part of a three-run fourth inning for Lakewood, the Class A minor league affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. He finished 0-for-2 as the designated hitter and also drew a walk in the sixth inning.
On Wednesday, the American Baseball Coaches Association became the third organization to name Ludy an All-American. He was also the Big 12 Player of the Year as he finished with 16 home runs and 71 RBIs, the fourth-highest total in Baylor history.

Brewster explodes
Rieley Brewster racked up nine RBIs Thursday in leading Brewster Electric to a 13-12 victory over First Merchants Bank in Portland Junior League Rookie softball.
Brewster doubled and scored in the top of the fourth inning as her team took a two-run lead and then held on for the win. She had four hits, including an inside-the-park home run, and scored three times.
Lydia Keihn also notched four hits and three runs. Erika Heitkamp and Jayden Claytor each hit inside-the-park homers for First Merchants.

Jay County REMC cruised to a 10-3 win over Portland Optimist in the other Rookie softball game with Aubrie Schwieterman going 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs. Kylie Morningstar added three hits, two runs and an RBI.
Optimist got two hits, a run and an RBI from Maebry Ninde.

Rockets rained out
VAN WERT, Ohio — The Portland Rockets got off to a great start in their quest for a sixth straight win Thursday, building a 2-0 lead over the Van Wert Twisters before the game was halted because of rain in the second inning.
Portland, which is 11-4 on the year, scored both of its runs in the opening frame. Jay County High School graduate Billy Wellman and Chris Miller (Earlham College) each had an RBI.
Starting pitcher Eathan Daggett (Indiana Wesleyan) tossed just 13 pitches before the game was called.
