Ludy, Powell lead Jay Co. to outright title (09/10/07)

MUNCIE - Finally, the Patriots can call the trophy theirs and theirs alone.
Jay County High School won all three of its matches Saturday, earning its first outright Olympic Athletic Conference boys tennis title in school history.
The Patriots (9-1), who shared the crown in 2002 and 2005, defeated Connersville 3-2 in the third and deciding match after topping Muncie Southside 5-0 and Anderson Highland 4-1.
The Patriots' top two singles players led the way for the squad, which won its only other conference title in 1975 while part of the Mississinewa Valley Conference.
No. 1 singles player Josh Ludy and No. 2 singles player Phil Powell each rallied for super tiebreaker wins in the deciding match.
Ludy, who ran his record to 12-2, won his opening set against Connersville's Jacob Bumbalough. He dropped the second set, but took the super tiebreaker 10-7 to stay perfect on the day.
Powell had to come back from a 6-3 loss in his first set against Trevor Conner. He took the second set 6-4 and controlled the super tiebreaker 10-5 for his ninth consecutive victory.
In other matches, Ludy defeated Cody Norvell of Southside 6-2, 6-0 and Zach Weldron of Highland 6-4, 6-0. Powell also turned in a second set shutout against Highland's Mitchell Phillips in a 6-3, 6-0 win after defeated Brandon Willard of Southside 6-2, 6-4.
The No. 1 doubles duo of Heath Rigby and Thomas McCowan improved to 9-5 as they earned the other point for the Patriots against Connersville. They were off the court quickly against Adam Bourware and Colin Judd with a 6-4, 6-2 victory.
Mark Alberson and Adam Horn suffered their first loss of the season against Connersville, dropping a 2-6, 6-4 (13-11) decision to Evan Barnes and Matt Bills to fall to 13-1.
Kyle Simmons (7-5) fought through injuries in each of his first two matches before retiring as he trailed 6-4, 4-2 to Alex Reibsomer of Connersville.
In the sweep of Southside it was Simmons over Ryan Brand 6-3, 6-1, Rigby and McCowan topping Nick Albertson and Jared Green 6-2, 6-2 and Alberson and Horn defeating Lynel Curd and Kevin Robey 6-1, 6-3.
Against Highland, Simmons topped Taylor Williams 6-3, 6-1, and Alberson and Horn defeated Ian Frazier and Trent Stephens 6-3, 6-0. Rigby and McCowan lost 6-1, 6-4 to James Davis and Eric Ray.[[In-content Ad]]
