Luers defeats Starfires

FORT WAYNE - The sectional preview Monday didn't go so well for the Starfires.

The South Adams High School volleyball team lost 25-19, 25-10, 25-13 to the Bishop Luers Knights. The teams will meet again in the sectional tournament, hosted by SAHS, Thursday, Oct. 22.

Karen Bollenbacher had 12 digs, six kills and three blocks in Monday's loss. Kassy Potts added 10 digs.

The Starfires dropped the junior varsity match 25-10, 25-20, and lost the freshman match 25-4, 25-17.

McFarland leads JC

CONNERSVILLE - Brock McFarland had a hand in five touchdowns Monday to lead the Jay County junior varsity football team to a 50-34 win over the Connersville Spartans.

McFarland torched Connersville on the ground of touchdown runs of 28, 56, 57 and 79 yards. The quarterback also opened the scoring with a 51-yard TD pass to Dakota Steed.

Lucas Weimer had a 59-yard scoring run, and Jacob Coffman added a 1-yard TD run.

JC freshmen roll

MUNCIE - The Jay County freshman football team clobbered the Muncie Southside Rebels 33-14 Monday.

Cody Bellis led the victory with two rushing touchdowns. He also caught a TD pass.

Vance Guntle and Herardo Perez each added one TD on the ground, and Radney Pearson returned an interception for a score.

EJMS spikers win

East Jay Middle School's seventh grade volleyball team fought off visiting St. Joe (Decatur) for a 25-22, 22-25, 15-9 win Monday. The sixth graders also won, 25-18, 25-2.

Malarie Houck powered the seventh graders with 12 points, including six aces. Catherine Dunn had eight digs and seven points, Michelle Wellman notched five kills and Jessica Kerrigan totaled five assists.

Ava Kunkler carried the sixth graders as she racked up 19 aces en route to 25 points. Hannah Lykins recorded a pair of kills, and Kylie Osborne had two assists.

Eagles top Salamonie

DUNKIRK - West Jay's volleyball teams completed winning seasons Monday with wins over Salamonie. The eighth grade team won 20-25, 25-12, 15-9 while the seventh graders picked up a 25-17, 25-17 victory.

Betsy Huffman led the eighth grade Eagles (6-4) with 11 points, and Kelsie Adkins had seven points and three aces. Ashley Motter and Kimbra Edwards each totaled four kills.

Kyra Westlake scored 10 points as the seventh grade team finished at 7-3. Courtney Finnerty added eight points.[[In-content Ad]]
