Lugar essay winners named

East Jay Middle School students recently won the Dick Lugar Essay Contest where the essay theme was “The Role of the Farm in a Healthy Diet.”
Winning was Brett Laux, the son of Ed and Valerie Laux of Bryant, and Abby Reier, the daughter of Steve and Margaret Reier, rural Portland.  

Scholarships
Indiana Extension Homemakers Association is offering eight $500 scholarships to Indiana residents who are 25 years or older to complete education or upgrade vocational skills. Anyone applying must be admitted to an academic or vocational school that is state-licensed or accredited.
IEHA is affiliated with the Cooperative Extension Service and Purdue University. Applications are available at the Jay County Extension Office, 126 N. Meridian St. in Portland, and must be postmarked by March 15. For more information, call (260) 726-4707.
Dream Ball
Second Harvest Food Bank will have its 16th annual Dream Ball on Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Horizon Convention Center in Muncie.
The theme will be “An Evening in Tuscany” and will feature dinner, dancing to the band “The Impalas” and live and silent auctions. A wine and cheese tasting event will preceed the evening from 6 to 7 p.m. for a charge of $12.
Second Harvest is the largest hunger relief charity in East Central Indiana.
