MAC openers are a success for Fort Recovery (04/20/04)

FRHS roundup

Redskins or Rangers, it didn’t matter. Midwest Athletic Conference teams with nicknames beginning with “R” couldn’t stop Fort Recovery Monday.

The Indian softball team opened MAC play with a 2-1, eight-inning win over the St. Henry Redskins, and the baseball team downed the New Knoxville Rangers 7-5 in its MAC opener.

The Tribe softball team — which won the regular-season contest, but lost in the sectional first-round to St. Henry last season — battled to a scoreless tie with the Redskins through the first five innings. St. Henry put one run on the board in the sixth, but the lead was short-lived as the Indians tied the game with a run in the bottom of the frame.

After a scoreless seventh Fort Recovery (6-4, 1-0 MAC) took the win with a run in the bottom of the eighth.

Krystal Rammel doubled, scored once and drove in a run for the Indians. Joscie Kaup had a pair of hits and an RBI.

Tiera Judy scored the other Tribe run.

Julie Smith shut down the Redskins, allowing just one unearned run in eight innings. She gave up seven hits and one walk while striking out nine.

The Fort Recovery baseball team (4-7, 1-0 MAC) trailed 4-1 after two innings before surging ahead. It scored twice in the third inning and four times in the fourth to take the victory.

Dusty Guggenbiller finished 3-for-4 with a double. He drove in four runs and scored once.

Todd Post had two hits, including a double, one stolen base and two runs. C.J. Tobe singled twice, scored twice and notched one RBI.

Tobe also picked up the win to improve to 2-1 on the season. He went the distance, allowing five runs — four earned — on nine hits.

He struck out four batters.

Both Fort Recovery teams will be on the road today. The softball team will visit Jefferson at 5 p.m., and the baseball team will play St. Henry at 5 p.m.

FR pounds Redskins

Kristen Schwieterman had an impressive day at the plate as the Fort Recovery junior varsity softball team posted an eight-run second inning in a 12-8 victory over the St. Henry Redskins.

Schwieterman reached base in each of her four plate appearances, finishing with two triples, a single and a walk. She racked up five RBIs, scored three times and stole two bases.

Sandra Sudhoff added two hits and two runs for the Indians, and Jill Wehrkamp had two hits and one RBI. Lori Osterholt drove in two runs, Lauren Wenning scored twice, and Brittany Brackman had a pair of stolen bases.

Tiff Gaerke took the victory, allowing eight runs — six earned — on five hits in seven innings. She walked eight and struck out three.[[In-content Ad]]
