Make the most of warm autumn days

As I See It

By Diana Dolecki-

The weather lately has been wonderful. I spent an entire afternoon last week piddling around outside just because it was too beautiful to waste the warmth by doing housework.
When I was outdoors I cut down the volunteer sunflowers. I'm sure the goldfinches were upset. I left plenty of seed heads on the ground and lots of seeds fell on the driveway. As goldfinches prefer not to feed on the ground, I'm guessing that our local chipmunk will benefit the most.
The weather almost makes me wish I was going fishing somewhere. I haven't picked up a fishing pole in years. I remember my grandfather going on fishing trips to Lake Erie with his friends. The fish he brought back were beyond delicious.
Later, after we moved to the farm, he and I would go down to the creek and catch sunfish. We always threw them back in.
After he died, I would often talk my mom into going fishing with me. I wasn't allowed to go alone in case one of the cows got cranky and decided to chase us. They never did.

The farm changed hands long ago. The fishing poles burnt up when the barn burned down. The house has been stripped of its pink siding and is now a putrid, bland beige. The creek is  overgrown. Nobody that I know of tortures the fish in that section of Twin Creek by catching them and tossing them back in.
Life changes and the weather will, too. The forecast is predicting that this week will be much cooler than the last one. I enjoyed the weather last week so much because it was so fleeting and out of character for November.
There is an old saying that says one should make hay while the sun shines. Working in the flowerbeds was my way of doing that. We should take advantage of opportunities before they evaporate.
We make time for what is important to us. When we put things off until we have time to do them they will never get done. It is too bad that we often have to delay the important stuff just to keep a roof over our heads and food in our ample bellies.
We should take time to do less of what we ought to do and more of what we want to do. We should go outside and piddle when the weather is nice and save the icky stuff for a nice rainy day.[[In-content Ad]]
