Manchester defeats Starfires (02/26/2009)

BERNE - The winning streak for the South Adams High School girls basketball team came to a close Thursday as the Manchester Squires defeated the host Starfires 54-44.

SAHS (7-11) had a one-point lead after the opening period, but fell behind by nine at halftime and could not recover. It had won three games in a row, holding teams to an average of 29 points during that stretch.

Tara Beitler scored 17 points for the Starfires, who already have the most wins since going 8-13 in 2002-03. Katrina Hawkins added 11 points.

South Adams closes the regular-season today at Bellmont.

In junior varsity action, Chelsey Nevil scored five points for the Starfires in a 24-14 loss.

Eagles crush HC

DUNKIRK - The West Jay Middle School wrestling team rolled to a 57-30 victory Thursday over Hartford City.

J.P. Fischer led the Eagles as he finished his 80-pound match with a pin in just 29 seconds. Other quick pins came from Dustin Tighe (110) in 38 seconds, Lucas Wiemer (135) in 43 seconds, Justin Love (125) in 50 seconds and Daniel Ring (HWT) in 59 seconds.

Bryce Bantz (85) and Jesse Finnerty (100) also recorded pins for West Jay, and Dylan Harris (145) won an 8-2 decision.

Mitch Bennett was victorious in junior varsity action.

Tribe girls split

FORT RECOVERY - Two players each tallied 10 points for the Fort Recovery Middle School eighth grade girls basketball team Thursday in a 36-18 victory over the Versailles Tigers. The Indian seventh graders lost, 41-10.

Chelsea Pottkotter and Rachel Rammel each had 10 points for the Tribe eighth graders, who improved to 10-1. Janelle Schwieterman added six points.

Jackie Fullenkamp scored eight points for the seventh grade team (2-9).

EJMS beats Stars

Willie Skiver and Kyle Garringer set the pace for the East Jay Middle School wrestling team Thursday in a 64-25 win over the South Adams Starfires.

Skiver (125) and Garringer (175) each recorded pins in just 17 seconds. Cody Bellis (160) pinned his opponent in 24 seconds, and Braden Smith-Lykins finished off his match in just 26 seconds.

Skyler Sibery (85), Corey Bellis (105), Brandon Poore (115), Pierce Clott (145) and Brandon Ferner (152) also picked up pins for the Chiefs (8-1).

Junior varsity wins came from Robert Cooper, Dylan Cope, Preston Keen, Nick Spahr, Logan Antrim and Eric Hemmelgarn.

Fort 7th wins

ST. HENRY, Ohio - The Fort Recovery Middle School seventh grade boys basketball team improved to 9-2 Thursday with a 39-19 win over St. Henry. The eighth grade squad lost, 56-43.

Elijah Kahlig finished with 10 points for the seventh graders, who led by 13 at halftime and gave up just two fourth-quarter points. Bobby Mattraw scored eight points.

Chad Schroer finished with 12 points for the eighth grade Indians (3-8). Trent Kaiser also reached double figures with 10 points.

Chiefs top Delta

East Jay Middle Schools sixth grade girls basketball team defeated the Delta Eagles 16-14 Thursday.

Breanne McIntire scored half of the points for the Chiefs (6-1). Catherine Dunn added three points and five rebounds.

Kai-Li Bauman scored six points to lead the B team to an 18-13 win.[[In-content Ad]]
