Manchester explodes for win over Starfires (02/03/04)

The last thing South Adams needed was to meet up with an angry Manchester team. But, after opening 11-3 the Manchester Squires had lost back-to-back games for the first time all year and took their frustrations out on the Starfires Monday night.

The South Adams (3-15) girls basketball team was in the game for a quarter before Manchester pulled away for a 61-38 victory.

The Starfires took an 11-7 lead after the first period, but Manchester outscored them 43-21 over the next two quarters to take command of the game.

Kelly Mertz was the lone South Adams player in double figures as she finished with 10 points. She also grabbed four rebounds.

Erin McCollum had six points, and Natalie Haines and Britany Moser each added five. Julie Muhlenkamp grabbed eight rebounds, and Kindle Inniger added three assists and three steals.

Brit Bager paced Manchester with 19 points, and Christa Deden added 10. Libby Pattison and Andrea Siebrase each had nine points, and Holly Vogel scored eight points.

South Adams will try to end its five-game losing streak when it hosts Bellmont Friday at 6 p.m.

EJ perfection continues

Muncie Northside nearly ended the East Jay eighth grade girls basketball team’s perfect season. Cassandra Huelskamp kept it alive.

Huelskamp hit a 3-pointer to force overtime, and the Chiefs improved to 13-0 with a 28-27 win after the extra session.

East Jay took a 5-0 lead after one period, but Muncie Northside cut the lead to one at the half. The teams were tied 15-15 after three quarters, and Northside held a 24-21 lead late in the contest.

But, Huelskamp kept the Chiefs’ hopes for an unbeaten season alive when she tied the game with a 3-pointer with 35 seconds to play. East Jay outscored Northside 4-3 in the overtime period to take the win.

Dana Horn paced the Chiefs with 10 points, and Huelskamp scored eight.

Chief wrestlers unbeaten

East Jay’s wrestling team stayed unbeaten with its 66-24 trouncing of Monroe Central Monday.

The Chiefs (5-0) got wins from Josh Lochtefeld (85), Casey Kenney (90), Mason Murphy (95), Ben Theurer (100), James Abbott (105) and Aaron Miller (110). Also winning matches were David Jones (115), Cody Sutton (120), Matt Price (145), Brad Tipton (152) and Kaleb Hemmelgarn (160).

Bloomfield, East advance

The rubber match is on its way.

Bloomfield Elementary and East Elementary split a pair of regular-season meetings, but they’ll get to decide the outcome once and for all in the championship game of the Jay County elementary boys basketball tournament this week.

Bloomfield advanced to Wednesday’s championship game with a 50-28 victory over General Shanks Monday. East rolled to the finals by crushing Judge Haynes 45-7.

Brad Horn went wild for Bloomfield (6-1), outscoring General Shanks by himself with 31 points. Eric Homan also reached double figures with 15 points.

Ben Vance paced General Shanks with 10 points, and Adam Coats finished with eight.

Austin Emerick had 11 points to lead a balanced scoring effort for East (6-1). Tyler Freyburgher and Jake Chneoweth each had six points, and Preston Roberts scored five.

Harley Arnold scored all seven points for Judge Haynes.

Bloomfield and East will meet in the tournament championship game at Jay County High School Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Fort tickets

Advance tickets for Fort Recovery’s home boys basketball game Friday against Parkway will go on sale Thursday.

Tickets will be available in the high school office Thursday from 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday from 12:30 to 2 p.m. They will also be sold in the middle school office Friday from 8 to 11:30 a.m.

Advance tickets are $3 for students at $5 for adults. All tickets at the door will be $5.

Coon hunt

The Limberlost Coonhunters Club will host several ICHA hunts during February.

Hunts will be held Friday and Saturday Feb. 6-7 and Feb. 13-14. The entry deadline is 7 p.m. on the day of the hunt.
