Margarita's opens in former Bandido's location
A new Mexican restaurant has officially opened in Portland.
Margarita’s, located at 1604 N. Meridian St., opened for the first time Wednesday. Normal business hours will be 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, with closing time extending a half hour to 10:30 p.m. on the weekends.
Management is currently in the process of planning a grand opening for early to mid-October.
Westenfeld open house
Swiss Village Retirement Community will give tours of their new wing at an upcoming open house.
The event is scheduled for Sept. 25 from 1 to 3 p.m.
Westenfeld is a rehabilitation wing built to hold up to 14 rehab clients in separate, furnished suites. The new facility will be home to physical, occupational and speech therapies.
Guests at the event will be served refreshments and have the chance to win a door prize.
Taste of Jay County
Tickets are now on sale for the third annual Taste of Jay County.
The event, Oct. 16 from 4-7 p.m. at the Jay Community Center, invites people from the community to act as taste-testers, sampling food from a variety of local restaurants and voting on their favorites.
The $15 tickets can be purchased at Main Street Market, The Flower Nook and the Community Resource Center.
Encouraging foreigners to invest
A new regional center hopes to fuel Eastern Indiana’s economy by offering incentives to foreigners who invest locally.
The Energize-ECI EB-5 Visa Regional Center, LLC will offer foreign investors a faster path to U.S. citizenship in return for investing at least $1 million — reduced to $500,000 in rural or high unemployment areas — in businesses that will benefit the U.S. economy and create or save at least 10 American jobs.
The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services approved the regional center, which is part of a government program created in 1992 to encourage foreign investment in the U.S.
Marsh contributes
An Indianapolis monument to 9/11 will benefit from a $60,000 commitment from Marsh Supermarkets Inc., parent company of Main Street Market.
Project 9/11 Indianapolis is a permanent memorial built to commemorate the events of 9/11, which will be dedicated in a ceremony Sunday on the 10th anniversary of the tragedy.
New employee
Heather Clemmons recently joined the Starr Real Estate team.
Clemmons, a Dunkirk resident, will provide buyer and listing services and property management.
Intern award winner
The Helena Chemical Company named Bryant native Michelle Dirksen as the 2011 Outstanding North Central Division Intern Award Winner.
Dirksen, a Purdue University junior, was selected from a group of 50 interns from across the country. The award of $1,500 is intended to encourage creativity and innovation among potential candidates.
VTF cover cropping
VanTilburg Farms, Inc. of Celina has developed a new seeder for improved cover cropping.
The seeder is designed to inter-seed new plants into standing crops. Benefits include a year-round crop given more time to grow and allowing it to establish an early stand.
