The Patriots can only hope to be as successful in the sectional tournament as they were in their home finale.
Jay County's wrestling team dominated the Marion Giants with nine pins Wednesday. After splitting the first six matches, the home team won five in a row and seven of the final eight in a resounding 57-21 victory.
Even with the 36-point win, Patriot coach James Myers said he thought the team still missed a couple of opportunities to score more points. But, "I'm happy," he said. "We wrestled well tonight. I expect us to wrestle well and pin guys and we did.
"Overall it was a solid team effort."
The victory, which improved the Patriots to 11-5, came in their final regular-season home match, but they will be on their home mats again as JCHS hosts the Jan. 27 sectional tournament.
Tom Smith highlighted the night of many pins, scoring the fastest of Jay County's nine falls. The 189-pounder needed just a single takedown to finish off Zach Campbell of Marion as he pinned the freshman in just 46 seconds.
"It was a lot better than getting pinned," joked Smith, the team's lone senior, after winning the final regular-season home match of his career. "It felt good. I'm ready for sectional.
"I've got a tough weight class, but hopefully I can make it out."
The victory improved Smith to 22-5.
"Tonight was usual Tom," said Myers. "He was focused, got after it and pinned his guy pretty fast.
"Last year he had a really solid season and kind of got disappointed because of what happened at sectional. This year he's had another great season. He's motivated to do really well. ...
"He means a lot to the kids. He's the only senior on the team. The kids look up to him and they listen to him."
The Giants followed Smith's win with back-to-back pins of their own to pull within 17-15, but the rest of the night was tough on the visitors.
Casey Kenney, who is 25-2 and ranked No. 19 in the state at 103 pounds, kicked off the painful run for Marion. He played a game of catch-and-release with freshman Chris Hearing, using three takedowns and a two-point near fall to build an 8-2 lead after the opening period. Kenney got a fireman's carry for another takedown in the second period and converted the pin in 3-minutes, seven seconds.
Cameron Pfeifer (112) followed with a 12-2 major decision over Khiry Henderson, and Josh Lochtefeld, Caleb Culy and Ben Theurer added consecutive pins. Lochtefeld (119) defeated Sergio Flores in 3:46, Culy (125) scored a first-period pin in 1:31 over Gabe Brown and Theurer (130) finished Caleb Thompson in 3:24.
Nick Duke (135) gave the Giants their only win in the final eight matches as he overcame a 6-3 deficit to pin Jay County's Sam Lyons in 3:00, but Aaron Miller (140) put the Patriots right back in the win column as he needed 3:21 to pin Ben Thompson.
Although it was well behind in team points, Marion at least looked primed to finish off the match with a win as Dustin McGuinn (145) pushed out leads of 5-2 after the first period and 9-3 at the end of the second against Aaron Brenner. But Brenner kept working, caught McGuinn in a headlock at the 1:20 mark of the third period and pinned him 16 seconds later.
"He had to stick him in order to win," said Myers. "To end a dual meet on a positive note like that was good for him and good for the team."
Jay County's other pin came from Justin Mann (160), who needed just 58 seconds to put Zeke Lloyd's back to the mat. Alan Brown (152) opened the match with an 18-2 technical fall over Gabe Randolph.
At 171 pounds, the Patriots' Brad Tipton suffered a 10-5 loss to Vincent Scott.
Myers said he feels good about where his team stands with the sectional tournament just over two weeks away.
"I think right now most of our guys are setting themselves up to do well," he said. "Our goal is to get out. (The top two teams in the nine-team field advance.) We've beaten every sectional opponent or placed higher than them in a tournament. I think the guys are gearing up for the sectional ... they're focused."

Jay County won the final two matches in less than one minute to pull out a 16-12 victory.
With the Patriots trailing 12-4 after the opening three matches, John Hawn (189) put them in position to win when he pinned Jarrett Herreff in just 53 seconds. Nate Wood (HWT) was even a bit faster, taking just 48 seconds to finish off Servando Salinas to lift JCHS to the victory.
The other Jay County win came in the opening 140-pound match where Skylar Finnerty won a major decision over Travis Curry.
Marion's Raymond Franks (145) pinned Kerri VanSkyock in 2:48, and Steven Proctor (152) defeated Frank Sammons in 4:59.[[In-content Ad]]
