For a half, Jay County stood toe-to-toe with their Giant foe. However, they couldn’t keep the pace after the intermission.
The visiting Marion Giants scored all of their goals in the final 35 minutes as they topped the Jay County High School boys soccer team 6-0.
After 45 minutes of scoreless soccer, Nick Evans broke the deadlock with a shot off from about 23 yards out that went off the left post and into the net with 34:47 on the clock. Marion (9-3) scored again less than five minutes later, and then added four tallies in the final 18 minutes.
The Patriots (3-9), playing their final home game of the season, were limited to just four shots on goal in their third straight defeat. Colton Bartlett had two, and Aaron Loy and Josh Priest added one apiece.
Dillon Ainsworth finished with 13 saves.

Volleyball falls
GASTON — The Class 1A No. 8 Wes-Del Warriors defeated the Patriots in three games Thursday, 25-15, 25-16, 25-16.
Tanner Martin finished with 12 assists and three points for Jay County, which is now 9-13. Mariah Hornaday had 11 kills and Maria Murphy added six, and both junior middle hitters turned in three blocks.
Alyssa Rigby totaled six digs and three points, and Sierra Weatherhead had four digs and three points.In junior varsity action, JCHS lost 25-22, 22-25, 15-11 to the Warriors.
Sam Homan had nine points, four kills and three blocks in the defeat. Paige Lennartz finished with eight assists, and Shannon Springer had five kills.

Girls soccer loses
YORKTOWN — Jay County suffered its fifth shutout in the last six games in a 3-0 loss Thursday to the Yorktown Tigers.
The home team got on the board just over eight minutes into the game when freshman Beverly Brittingham scored on a breakaway. The score remained 1-0 for more than 45 minutes until Kaley Burke found the back of the next to push the Tigers’ lead to two.
Michaela Mabee added the third goal for Yorktown (7-5-1).
Mollie May finished with 12 saves for the Patriots, and LeAnn Horn recorded the only shot on goal.
The junior varsity game finished in a scoreless tie with Brooke Reynard totaling nine saves for JCHS (1-4-1). Cydney Huey took two shots on goal, and Takoa Knight added one.

WJ volleyball wins 2
DUNKIRK — West Jay Middle School’s eighth grade volleyball team defeated the visiting Monroe Central Golden Bears 25-16, 25-10 Thursday. The sixth graders won 22-25, 25-21, 15-4 while the seventh grade team fell 25-10, 25-10.
Ashley Lowe racked up 17 points, including 15 in the second game, for the eighth grade Eagles (3-3). Tyrah Westlake had eight points, and Randi Auker added three kills.
Kaity Grady led the sixth-grade win with 15 points. Alli Louck scored 11 points.
Emily Jobe finished with three points for the seventh grade squad.

Chief spikers split
RICHMOND — The East Jay eighth grade volleyball team picked up its fifth victory Thursday 25-14, 25-8 over Richmond Dennis. The seventh graders lost 25-24, 8-25, 15-13.
Breanne McIntire finished with eight points, including seven aces, for the eighth graders (5-8). Michelle Wellman scored nine points, and Malarie Houck had three assists and two kills.
Kylie Osborne totaled 10 points, including five aces, for the seventh graders. Gabby Hart scored nine points, Hannah Lykins notched three assists and Ava Kunkle had three kills.[[In-content Ad]]
