Marsh has 1st quarter profit (08/12/06)

Business roundup

After three quarters without a profit, Marsh Supermarkets announced a profit for the first quarter of fiscal 2007.

Marsh reported a net income of $1.1 million, or 15 cents per share, more than doubling the figure from the same quarter last year when the company posted a net income of $674,000 or 8 cents per share.

The company said increased income was the result of cutting expenses, closing two supermarkets and six convenience stores, and making advertising more efficient.

"Our focus on controlling expenses helped to moderate the negative pressure on revenue caused by the effects of competition and the uncertainty in the marketplace regarding the outcome of the sale of the company," said Don E. Marsh, chairman and chief executive officer.

Founded in 1931 in Muncie, Marsh has been ridden with weak sales, increased competition and high debt in recent years, resulting in the May announcement that a Florida company would buy the troubled chain.

Sun Capital Partners inked an agreement with Marsh on May 2, stating the company would become a wholly owned subsidiary of the Sun-affiliated MSH Supermarkets Holding Corporation.

Sun does not have previous experience operating grocery stores.

Marsh Supermarkets Inc. owns and operates 38 LoBill Food stores, including one in Portland, and 154 Village Pantry convenience stores, also with one in Portland, in addition to 69 Marsh supermarkets in Indiana and western Ohio.
