Mathias leads Jay Co. golfers

WINCHESTER — Another tournament brought another chance for the Patriots to improve.
Jay County High School’s boys golf team turned in another season-best score Saturday, finishing with a 344 to place fourth out of 11 teams in the 11-team Winchester Invitational.
Richmond and Blackford each scored 323, with the former taking first place on the fifth-place tiebreaker. The host Golden Falcons were third with a 326.
Freshman Evan Mathias set the pace with a consistent round for the Patriots, whose previous best for 18 holes was a 357 at the South Adams Invitational. They had scored in the 390s at their first two 18-hole tournaments of the year.
Mathias totaled nine pars and bogeyed the remaining nine holes to finish with an 82.
Drew Houck recorded two birdies and six pars as he finished one stroke behind Mathias, and Justen Keller had one birdie and five pars for an 89.
Evan Ryder completed the team score with a 93, and Austin Mann shot 95.

SA softball splits
BERNE — The host Starfires scored once in the bottom of the seventh inning Saturday to win 6-5 in the first game of a doubleheader over the Monroe Central Golden Bears before dropping game two 15-7.

Brianna Nevil notched two hits, an RBI and a run in the opener for South Adams (3-7), and Rachel Hirschy added a hit, a run and an RBI. Alexis Ford also drove in a run.
Alyssa Bluhm got the win as just two of the five runs against her were earned.
She gave up seven hits and six walks while striking out two.
Brittany Pugsley went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI in the second game. Logan Chandler, Ford and Bluhm each added two hits.
Lily Taing took the loss, giving up 14 runs — 12 earned — on seven hits and 13 walks in five innings.

Jay track fifth
NEW CASTLE — The Jay County boys track team scored 49 points to finish fifth at Friday’s New Castle Invitational. Anderson won with 187 points, and Muncie Southside was second with 88.
Cade Price picked up the only victory for the Patriots, clearing the bar at 5 feet, 10 inches to win the high jump. Zach Cash finished in the top three of two events, taking second in the 300-meter hurdles in 41.6 seconds and third in the 110 hurdles in 16.3.
Brad Leuthold was third in the 800 run with a time of 2 minutes, 8.9 seconds.[[In-content Ad]]
