May OK after injury in defeat vs. Trojans (08/25/04)

PORTLAND — Jay County’s Nick May was carted off the field in an ambulance Tuesday. Soon after, the Patriot chances at a victory left too.
Most importantly, May’s injury was not serious.
May went to the ground for the second time in the game with about 12 minutes to play. When teammates tried to help him off the field he was unable to withstand the pain, so Jay Emergency Medical Services was called.
The senior was taken to the Jay County Hospital, where he was treated and released.
His mother, Mindy, said this morning he was hit in the back, re-aggravating an injury he suffered last week against Noblesville. She said it caused painful muscle spasms in his legs but he is OK, although he will likely miss several games.
After the long delay to take care of May, the New Castle Trojans scored three times in a matter of minutes en route to beating Jay County 4-0.
“We just totally lost focus,” said Jay County coach Alan Bailey. “They stayed with their game, we kind of back off and they made some good runs. When they got that second goal we just dropped our heads basically.
“The guys were totally out of position back there, not playing their normal spots. But, you’ve got to get used to that.”
New Castle junior Logan Brewer scored two of the three late goals — his second and third of the game — to finish with a hat trick.
With his team already leading 1-0, Brewer got a broke free less than a minute after the long stoppage of play. He was taken down in the box and awarded a penalty kick, which he got past goalie Trent Bailey for the 2-0 lead.
About a minute later Trojan junior Jeremy Beach found freshman Caleb Hatfield with a great pass from the left side toward the right post. Hatfield got to the ball just before Bailey and slammed it to the left corner of the net.
Brewer scored again with about another minute, looping a free kick over Bailey’s outstretched arms.
New Castle coach Rick Brewer said Logan Brewer and the Trojans (1-1-1) have started to figure out how to take advantage of opposing defenses.
“We’re adjusting,” he said. “We’re learning how to play with triple teams on Logan. To this point we haven’t done a very good job.”
But they did against the Patriots, as Brewer also scored the first goal 15 minutes into the second half.
Zed Leath lofted the ball from his fullback position, and Brewer simply outran the Jay County defense. He dribble just in front of defender Sean Adams and beat Bailey to the left corner of the goal for the score.
“Logan (Brewer) is spectacular,” said Alan Bailey. “When he gets an opportunity he’s going to put it in the net.”
Brewer took nine shots, five on goal, as he scored three times. Tyler Mastin took three shots on goal, and Jeremy Beach and Hatfield each had two.
Rick Brewer also credited Leath for an outstanding game as he led the Trojans to the shutout.
“Zed’s an animal,” he said. “He’s our Logan in the back.
“What really loosened the game up was Zed started making runs out of his fullback position. He started getting the ball and started trying to push it.
“When he plays with a certain intensity and a certain speed he’s as good a fullback as we’ve ever had in the history of our school.”
The Patriots (1-2) took 17 shots in the contest, but only managed to get three shots on goal. Sergio Woo, May and Mason Shreve each had one.
“We played good for about 60 minutes,” said Bailey. “In the first half we controlled the game. We knew what we had to do in the second half.
“Offensively we just didn’t put it in the net. Our passing was good tonight. We’ve just got to take more shots. When we get that split-second chance for a shot we’ve got to fire away.”
