McBride powers East Jay (05/05/08)
EJMS/WJMS/SAMS track
Jordan McBride's pair of wins led the East Jay Middle School boys track team to victory Saturday. Bailee Green and Hannah Moore each won a single event to power the South Adams girls.
The Chief boys finished first as host of the East Jay Relays, scoring 84 points to finish ahead of Adams Central. South Adams was fourth with 46, and West Jay was last of five teams with 16.
The Starfires took the girls competition with 82.5 points, followed by Richmond at 46. East Jay got two wins from Maria Murphy and was third with 40.5, just ahead of fourth-place finishers West Jay (39) and Adams Central (39).
McBride powered the EJMS boys in the field events, taking the shot put by nearly two feet at 40 feet, 2¼ inches. His win in the long jump came by a tighter margin as he edged Shawn Reinhard of Adams Central (16 feet, 1½ inches) with a leap of 16 feet, 3 inches.
Green eked out her victory for the South Adams girls in the 100 dash. She was just seven hundredths of a second faster than Richmond's Whitney Hampton in 13.21 seconds.
Moore led a one-two Starfire finish in the 1,600 run, winning the event in 5-minutes, 40 seconds. Kristen Muselman was second for SAMS in 6:01.
Murphy was the only other double winner from the local schools as she swept the girls throwing events. She took the discus at 77 feet, 9 inches, and won the shot put with a toss of 32 feet, 7 inches.
Liz Lennartz and Chelsea Easton shared the only victory for the West Jay girls, each clearing the high jump bar at 4 feet, 4 inches.
Brock McFarland gave the East Jay boys a third field-event win, topping the field by four inches in the high jump at 5 feet, 6 inches.
The top effort for the West Jay boys came from Taylor Hatzell, who was second in the discus at 105 feet, 5 inches. Runner-up results for the South Adams boys came from Evan Liechty with a time of 5:21 in the 1,600 run and Joel Schmidt in 16.87 in the 110 hurdles.
The Chief boys also won the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 relays. South Adams' girls won the 4x100 and 4x400 relays and the distance medley, and the West Jay girls were first in the 800 sprint medley.
