McCombs lifts JC over Bruins

HARTFORD CITY — Senior Colton McCombs scored the game-winning goal as the Patriots pulled to .500.
McCombs’ score gave the Jay County High School boys soccer team a 2-1 victory Thursday over the host Blackford Bruins.
After the teams played to a 1-1 tie in the first half, McCombs scored the only goal of the second. He finished the game with five shots on goal.
Zane Shreve scored the Patriots’ goal in the opening half off of an assist from Alex Abbott.
Kyle Dirksen went the distance in the net, giving up the one Blackford goal while making five saves.
Abbott matched McCombs with five shots on goal, and Ian Miller, Alex Dunn, Kaelin Jewell and Shreve each added two for JCHS (4-4).
Freshmen roll
Jay County’s freshman football team rolled to a 34-14 victory at home Tuesday over the Connersville Spartans.
Matt Blackford powered the Patriots as he racked up two touchdowns and more than 100 yards on the ground. He also scored a TD on a kickoff return.
Michael Vanover and Drew Huffman also added TD runs.
Andrew McShane and Austin Fairchild each scored touchdowns Aug. 27 as the JCHS combined junior varsity/freshman squad defeated Blackford 16-8.
Jay County also scored on a safety.
Chief spikers fall
The East Jay Middle School sixth grade volleyball team lost its season opener 25-9, 25-11 Thursday to visiting Selma.
Hannah Dillon led the Chiefs with three service points, including two aces, and one kill. Kailee Denney had three service points and one kill.
EJMS also dropped the B team match 25-12, 25-18. Skye Wimmer had three points, all of which came on aces.
