FORT WAYNE - Individuals in championship races will be few and far between for Jay County and South Adams.
Junior Tom McCord was the only Patriot to advance in an individual event after Thursday night's sectional preliminaries hosted by Homestead at Summitt Middle School in Fort Wayne.
Justin Klopp earned two finals berths, including a top seed, and Alex Habegger added one for the Starfires.
The No. 4 host Spartans took three of the six championship slots in all eight individual events, including a sweep of the top three in five.
Still, Jay County coach Barry Weaver was pleased with the effort from his team, which produced career-best times in 75 percent of its races despite having been out of the water since Monday thanks to the inclement weather.
McCord gave Jay County its only top-six individual finish early in the night, taking fifth place in the 200-yard freestyle. He finished fifth in the event with a career-best time of 1-minute, 56.61 seconds.
Klopp has the best chance of anyone from either school earning a state berth as he was the only non-Homestead swimmer to earn a top seed. He accomplished that feat by edging Anderson Whipp of the Spartans by nine hundredths of a second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 49.54 seconds.
The SAHS sophomore was second to Homestead senior Adam Lill in the 50 freestyle by 13 hundredths in 22.46.
In order to advance to the state meet a swimmer must either win the sectional title or reach a state qualifying time. State standards in Klopp's two events are 21.94 for the 50 freestyle and 48.39 for the 100 freestyle.
Habegger, a freshman, had the only other top-six individual finish for the Starfires. He placed fifth in the 100 backstroke at 1:04.55.
McCord was also in on both of the Patriots' fifth-place relay efforts. He joined Sam Miller, Andres Ayesta and Chance Milligan in the 200 freestyle relay for a time of 1:36.90, and Miller, Milligan and Scott Walker in the 400 freestyle to finish in 3:35.29.
South Adams made the finals in only one of its three relays, taking fifth in the meet-opening 200-yard medley event. Klopp, Habegger, John Gresla and Justin Sommer teamed for a time of 1:49.98.
Making Saturday's consolation finals for the Patriots were: Sam Miller (seventh - 100 butterfly, eighth - 100 freestyle); McCord (10th - 100 freestyle), Aaron Hudson (10th - 100 butterfly, 11th - 100 breaststroke) and Walker (11th - 500 freestyle).
In the consolation races for the Starfires will be Habegger (eighth - 100 butterfly), Kyle Affolder (eighth - 100 breaststroke, 11th - 200 individual medley), Gresla (10th - 500 freestyle) and Sommer (12th - 500 freestyle).
Hudson, Ayesta, Lance VanSkyock and Lucas Karpe placed seventh in the 200 medley relay for Jay County.
Gresla, Sommer, Habegger and Klopp were ninth in the 400 freestyle relay for the Starfires, and Affolder, Derek Kirchhofer, Phil Goodwin and Eric Feeney finished 11th in the 200 freestyle relay.[[In-content Ad]]
