McMillan wins two at invite

UPLAND — Jordan McMillan won a pair of events for the Jay County High School girls track team at Saturday’s Taylor University Indoor Invitational. Cara Garringer added another victory, and Joel Schmidt won an event for South Adams.
McMillan dominated the long jump, winning by nearly a foot at 16 feet, 1½ inches to qualify for the indoor state finals. She took the top spot in the 55-meter dash by a tenth of a second in 7.71.
Garringer, who missed last season because of a knee injury, edged teammate Maria Murphy by two inches to pick up first place in the shot put at 35 feet, 8 inches. Both Patriots joined McMillan in qualifying for the state finals in the event.
Schmidt’s victory for the Starfire boys came with a time of 8.53 in the 55 hurdles. Jay County’s Zach Cash was fifth in 8.88.
Leah Wellman, Amber Huelskamp, Kassi Hemmelgarn and Katie Simmons were second in the distance medley relay in 14 minutes, 5 seconds for the JCHS girls.

JC girls stay perfect
The Jay County middle school girls swim team kept its undefeated record in tact Monday, knocking off the Bellmont Squaws 95-90. The boys team lost an 87-84 decision.
Anne Vormohr, Sophie Bader, Katy Smeltzer and Ashley Mark all picked up individual victories for the girls team. They also teamed to win the medley relay, and Sydney Mathias, Emma Laux, Carli Ostrowski and Smeltzer were first in the 200 freestyle relay.
James Keen broke another record for the boys team as he won both the 100-yard backstroke and 100 individual medley. His time of 1:02.42 in the backstroke shattered the previous record of 1:05.91 held by Caleb Dann.
Sok Vormohr also earned a victory for the boys team, which swept all three relays.

Starfires defeat Leo
The South Adams Junior High wrestling team defeated the Leo Lions 54-29 Monday.
The Starfires earned wins in 10 of 16 matches with victories coming from Kadin Gerber, Matt Nussbaum, Chance Sprunger, Ryan Ford, Sawyer Miller, Boaz Marbach, Gage Conner, Kody Coates, Gabe Schwartz and Mason Morningstar.
Ford, Miller, Brock Twitty and Morningstar all picked up championships as South Adams placed second at Saturday’s Adams Central Invitational. Sprunger and Marbach finished as runners-up.

WJMS falls just short
West Jay Middle School’s wrestling team came up just short Monday in a 27-22 loss to Southern Wells.
Triston VanSkyock had the quickest of the Eagles’ three pins, winning at 145 pounds in just 35 seconds. Other pins came from Mitch Bennett (HWT) and Brandon Hollingsworth (215).
Dallas Dudelston (110) won by a 14-2 major decision.
At Saturday’s Adams Central Invitational, Chad Homan (170) and Hollingsworth each finished in fourth place.

Five earn titles
FISHERS — Sophie Bader won four events Saturday, leading a group of five Jay County Winter Swim team members who earned victories at the Indiana Swimming Divisional Championships.
Bader took the top spot in the 100-yard freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 200 backstroke and 200 breaststroke in the 14-and-younger girls division. Also adding victories in at least one event were James Keen, Alex Bader, Mackinley Timmerman and Anne Vormohr.
Top-eight finishes to earn divisional medals came from Eliza Bader, Alexis Bubp, Cady Farlow, Ashley LeFever, Caitlin Mark, Cassidy Martin, Katy Smeltzer, Sidney Sprunger, Carley Stone, Cori Stone and Sok Vormohr.[[In-content Ad]]
