Meeker to speak at New York confab

Business Roundup

Jay County native Mary Meeker will be among the speakers at the Conversational Marketing Summit, set for June 7 and 8 in New York City.

Meeker, often referred to as the "godmother of the Internet," is a managing director of Morgan Stanley.

A graduate of Jay County High School and DePauw University, she is the daughter of the late J. Gordon and Catherine Meeker.

Meeker made investment headlines earlier this year when she spoke at Google's Atmosphere conference and forecast a dramatic growth in data usage on mobile networks over the next four years, seeing a 4,000 percent increase in usage.

Other speakers at the June session include Arthur Sulzberger Jr., chairman of the New York Times company, and Arianna Huffington, co-founder and editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post.

CR intern

Sally Ransom, who completed her senior year of classes at Ball State University this spring, will serve as a summer intern for The Commercial Review. Ransom studied photojournalism and psychology at Ball State and is looking forward to interning at The CR. The internship will entail writing, reporting, and photographing events for the paper.

Born and raised in the small town of Dillsboro, Ransom hopes to join the Peace Corps after she graduates from Ball State and travel overseas.

Testified

POET vice president for commercial development Scott Weishaar recently testified to the House Agriculture Committee on the benefits and prospect of ethanol.

Weishaar outlined four steps that will help the country reach its goal of 36 billion gallons of renewable fuel by 2022 including increasing ethanol in gasoline from 10 to 15 percent, mandating that new vehicles are flex-fuel capable, providing incentives for installation of blender pumps and supporting cellulosic ethanol development through loan guarantees.

The hearing took place at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D. and is viewable on the POET Web site.

Growth

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. reported a 10 percent increase in profits due to international growth.

Net income was $3.32 billion for the first quarter, up from $3.02 billion the year before.

International sales increased 8.9 percent as U.S. sales saw a decrease of 1.4 percent.

Railroad awards

Nineteen POET ethanol plants, including Portland's location, were recently recognized by Norfolk Southern and Canadian National railroads for safe transporting practices.

The awards are given to companies that have no railroad related accidents during the year and have successful accident prevention plans in place.

No. 6

Edward Jones was recently ranked the No. 6 best place to work in Indiana in the large company category by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce.

Edward Jones, which has about 900 Hoosier employees and 37,000 nationally, hired 149 new employees in the last fiscal year. The financial firm has a location in Portland.

Centier Bank topped the listing with Microsoft and Exact Target rounding out the top three.

Profits increase

Tyson Foods Inc. turned a profit in the second quarter, well up after taking a loss in the same quarter last year.

Tyson reported a net income of $159 million in the second quarter, up from a $119 million loss in the same quarter last year. Sales increased to $6.9 billion, up from $6.3 billion last year.

All of the company's operating segments - chicken, beef, pork and prepared foods - were profitable during the quarter, something the company struggled with in the past year.

Growing

Dollar-store chains, including Dollar General and Family Dollar, are continuing to expand as consumers look for lower-priced retail goods.

Dollar General plans to add 600 stores to its already 8,800 locations in 35 states. Family Dollar, which has more than 6,600 locations in the U.S. is also planning to open 200 new stores this year.

Dollar stores continue to compete with larger retailers such as Walmart for shoppers looking to stretch every penny.

Change approved

Stockholder's approved officially changing the legal name of telecommunication provider CenturyLink to CenturyLink Inc.

The company, which was formed from a merger between Embarq and CenturyTel, was operating under CenturyTel Inc. prior to the change. The company's stock will continue to be listed under the symbol CTL.[[In-content Ad]]
