Meet result reversed (12/17/2008)

Local roundup

Another day brought a different result.

Jay County High School's girls swim team defeated South Adams 93-92 on the scoreboard Monday night, but that result was overturned by the IHSAA Tuesday after Starfire coach Janelle Gresla filed a protest. The new final score for the meet is South Adams 94, Jay County 91.

The dispute came in the 400-yard freestyle relay, the final event of the meet. Jay County changed its first swimmer in the event without informing the meet official.

In an e-mail this morning Sandy Searcy, IHSAA assistant commissioner for girls swimming and diving, noted the rule states: "The first swimmer of a relay team, once called to the starting platform by the referee, shall not change his/her swimming order in the relay event with any teammate."

Because of the error, Jay County's relay team, which placed second, was disqualified. The disqualifcation gave South Adams first and second place in the event, which was enough to swing the score in its favor.

Cady Farlow was the lone double winner in the group as she placed first in the 11-12-year-old girls 50- and 100-yard breaststroke. Her time of 36.03 seconds in the 50-yard event qualified her for the state meet.

James Keen won the 11-12-year-old boys 100 butterfly, Anna Nussbaum took the top spot in the 8-and-younger girls 25 backstroke and Sidney Sprunger was first in the 10-and-younger girls 50 backstroke.
